The most common method of fossilization is called permineralization, or petrification. After an organism's soft tissues decay in sediment, the hard parts — particularly the bones — are left behind. Water seeps into the remains, and minerals dissolved in the water seep into the spaces within the remains, where they form crystals. These crystallized minerals cause the remains to harden along with the encasing sedimentary rock.

There are four types of fossils, there is mold fossils. Mold fossils are a fossilized impression made in the substrate - a negative image of the organism. Cast fossils are another type of fossil, they are formed when a mold is filled in. Trace fossils are also another type of fossil, they are fossilized nests, gastroliths, burrows, footprints, and etc. True form fossils are the final type of fossil, they are the fossils of the animal or animal part.

A fossil is the naturally preserved remains or traces of animals or plants that lived in the geologic past. There are two main types of fossils; body and trace. Body fossils include the remains of organisms that were once living and trace fossils are the signs that organisms were present (footprints, tracks, trails, and burrows).
