The smell of rain in the Balkans

The Smell of Rain in the Balkans is a television series based on Gordana Kuić's novel of the same name. The series covers the period from the beginning of World War I to the end of World War II and describes the relationships during wartime in Sarajevo, the sacrifice of the eldest Buka, the dreams of young Riki, and the religious conflict between the daughters of Nina, Klara and Blanki who love Christians.
This is one exciting, dramatic story of the Sephardic family in Sarajevo at a time that was most traumatic for Jews. The original title of this doctoral dissertation is owed to cooks of Yugoslav descent who were sitting at a table in a canteen in Vienna and wanted to write a birthday card to their boss. One dictated and while being annoyed that the one who was writing was not listening, uttered a sentence from the title. It contains a number of interesting, often humorous details that bring the reader closer to the time of the mass migration of Yugoslav workers abroad.

Tara Butulija IV8

This is a moving story about a Montenegrin family who participated in colonization of Vojvodina, after the Second World War. It shows how the complicated political situation of those times affected a patriarchal and traditional family. The hero of the play is Milorad Vučić who manages to impose the new ideology, communism to his family and convinces them to leave their home and move from Montenegro to Vojvodina. In his honest following of the higher goal, he forgets some of the basic values of life and the whole family faces a tragedy that will effect even the generations to follow.

Nađa Urošević IV8

Atop that list is Czech resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), whose only hope for escape is Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a cynical American who risks his neck for no one—especially Laszlo and his wife, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), Rick’s ex-lover who broke his heart. Rick has sought refuge from his misery in French-held Morocco, seemingly content to ignore the war raging in Europe and quietly tend his business. That business is a seedy nightclub that caters to an even seedier clientele. Ilsa begs Rick for help—he has come into possession of the letters of transport Laszlo needs to get out of the country. She offers herself in exchange for Laszlo's safe transport. Bitter Rick must decide what is more important—his own happiness or the lives that hang in the balance.

Никола Николић 4-8

Morris from America is a 2016 German movie that tells a story of Morris, a 13-year old American boy facing the struggles of moving to Germany with his father, who is forced to move there after landing a job as a soccer coach. He finds it hard to fit in, as his dreams of becoming a rapper are much harder to accomplish in a country where that sort of music isn't really popular. Also, he obviously gets bullied, as anyone in high school who is different than others does, and all of this only piles up to the tragic loss of his mother. But, he finds his solace in Katrin, a 15-year old native girl, who he falls for. She gets him to open up, live a little. That included partying, but also honing his music skills and showing them off to the world.

In my opinion, the movie fairly accurately depicts the coming of age of a young boy and his dad in a unknown society, while also going through all of the troubles that ordinary teenagers go through.

Владимир Алексић IV8

Published in Belgrade in 1971 as Roman o Londonu, the novel follows an aging Russian émigré, Nikolai Repnin, as he attempts to make a life in the British capital in the 1940s, painting a starkly revelatory portrait of the war-battered city through the eyes of a person living in a constant state of rejection and alienation. Born a Russian noble in pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg, Repnin is now reduced to eking out a living from odd jobs in the huge city, whose buildings, monuments, citizens and customs he portrays with fascination. Repnin is beset by memories of home but has no opportunity of making a home in the new environment.
Repnin is accompanied through most of the novel by his beautiful wife, Nadya, ten years his junior, whom he wishes to save from poverty by sending her to America to stay with her aunt, also a Russian émigré, who has found her feet in New York. There is also a definite existentialist strand as Repnin contemplates suicide, particularly after his wife’s departure for the New World.
Анђела Олуић

Jacob Lawrence was an African-American painter known for his portrayal of African-American life. This epic series dramatically depicts the post–World War I migration of African-Americans from the rural South to the industrial North. The Migration Series is unique in its examination of the artist’s vivid images and inventive narrative technique, in the context of both the 1940s and the present. As a modern-day griot, or storyteller, his words and images convey metaphors of injustice, strife, change, hope, and beauty. Created on the eve of World War II, as American industry once again sought black labor, The Migration Series is also a cautionary tale, citing disappointments of the recent past and inspiring new hope for the future.

Lila Milosevic IV8

Unlike his best friend, circus clown Anatoly, who hates all about living in the Soviet Union, Vladimir is generally content with his life. The circus is traveling to New York City for a show, during which time Anatoly plans to defect, which may be the worst kept secret within the circus, especially as their KGB handlers want Vladimir to spy on Anatoly about such plans. But when push comes to shove, it is Vladimir who senses an opportunity to defect, he doing so despite knowing that he will probably never see his family or friends back in the Soviet Union ever again. Vladimir has his own view of the American dream, the general concept of freedom which appeals to him the most despite not truly understanding what it means. He finds that almost everyone he meets, all immigrants in one form or another, all have their American dream, their own pursuit of which which may be incompatible with his own fulfillment of being an American.
Михајло Крунић IV8

The film "King Petar of Serbia" was made on the basis of the novel "King Petar's socks", and the film itself was directed by Petar Ristovski. The film is one of the dramas that began projecting across Serbia in December 2018. Petar Kraradjordjevic was actually a banished from the land and could not return because of the Obrenovic dynasty. Through a combination of historical circumstances, he returns to his homeland and establishes democracy. But very soon the First World War of 1914 broke out and a series of battles for native lands such as the Battle of Cer and Kolubara. Because of the enemies who exerted great pressure on our territory, King Petar and his people and other state bodies retreated to Corfu across the Albanian mountains. While retreating across the Albanian mountains, the King meets Makren, the mother of Marinko soldiers. Unable to find her son in the columns of the army and the people, she asked the king to find her son and to hand him a pair of socks that she had knit for him. Unfortunately, King Marinka finds it too late and Makrena dies on the grave of a young Austrian soldier. A film that authentically depicts what the Serbian people went through to get to Corfu and Vid, through what a frost famine and loss. Also, the film is a Serbian contender for the "Oscar" at the American Film Academy for Best Foreign Film.

Мина Савић IV/8

OSAMA ; A KASABA in NEW YORK

A word from the director

Darko Bajic

I approached the play Osama – a Kasaba in New York from an angle different than the one the same story was approached from in the novel. For me it was first and foremost a story about a generation that is close to me, which, after a carefree childhood and youth in Yugoslavia went straight into a bloody war. Some were sent directly to death, some into expatriation, while some were left to live here, facing the consequences of the tragedy they had been through. Thorough this play I tried to find an answer whether it is possible for my generation to cleanse itself from the wounds or whether such cleansing is only possible for the next generations – our children.
A word from the author

Vladimir Kecmanovic

Just as Andrić’s wretched hero imagined he was a Turkish sultan and paid for that delusion with his life, the novel’s Bajazid-Bajo imagines that he is the terrorist Osama Bin Laden and ends up in an equally tragic way. They both end up in a damned yard – one in an Ottoman Turk gaol, from which no one has ever got out, and the other in the global prison, from which there is no escape, neither metaphorically nor physically. In the dramatic text Osama – a Kasaba in New York, which is a free adaptation of my novel, this truth is transposed in a somewhat less fierce way. Perhaps that’s because the audiences don’t like to be faced with painful truths. Maybe it is also because it is not wise to provoke the rulers of today’s world by comparing them directly to the Ottoman evildoers. But, the most likely explanation is that these two reasons are deeply and firmly connected.

Show must go on.
