Recently, there has been a lot of buzz about a famous celebrity couple rescuing a beagle dog. Amid this discussion, it’s worth reflecting on the plight of dogs in the medical field. While dogs play a critical role in medical research, it’s apparent that we humans are, in many ways, ‘consuming’ them—advancing at the expense of their rights. In my presentation, I will share some potential practices that could be implemented to improve the welfare of dogs in the medical field.

In conclusion, we must ask: Why do we use lab animals for medical development instead of humans? According to philosopher Peter Singer, animals should be given equal consideration. This leads us to question whether our treatment of animals in research is a form of speciesism. As we move forward, we must consider whether our progress in medical research can truly be justified at the cost of another living being’s rights and well-being.
