An extreme winter storm event in February 2021 caused electricity generation failure in the state of Texas. This resulted in a loss of more than 4.5 million homes. Ultimately resulted in at least 57 deaths across 25 Texas counties, and over $195 billion in property damage.

Not only did the storm affect people by leaving them with out power for extended periods, and killing loved ones. It also left them with financial burdens, and with busted pipes.

It revealed vulnerabilities in the states deregulated electricity market, which led to skyrocketing energy prices.

How did it impact the planet?

Estimated damage to be $130 billion in Texas alone. To move forward Texas needs to rethink the states regulatory approach to energy to avoid future such outcome.

Another interesting thing is that ECROT later admitted that the grids frequncy was dropping so fast that they had to manually initiate the widespread rolling blckouts to prevent a complete system shutdown.
