Although Chris hates the idea of materialism, he still proceeds to hold onto his books. At one point we see him burying them as his way of leaving behind his old life, alongside his "rebirth". This doesn't last very long though as we see him come back before he goes to Alaska. Its Ironic and a theme in that although he states he hates his old life, he still somehow cannot let it go, beyond running away.

Chris originally set out with the intent of reaching Alaska, no idea of how or when he would get there, his quest was purely about the destination, Chris had nearly no preparation on his journey. E.g. He illegally sailed down the river, jumped a border and had very little equipment or knowledge of how to survive in Alaska, Which inevitably led to his death. The equipment he did have was given to him out of generosity.
Robyn on the other hand set out on her journey to learn, and prove to herself that she could, she focused more heavily on the journey, even eventually bending to the decision of the natural geographic photographer to take more time and value the journey and thus nearly the first half of the book is Robyn's preparation, preparing camels, learning survival techniques and thus valuing her survival far more significantly than Chris.
