Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus): The cheetah is important to its ecosystem because it keeps the animals that it hunts in check. Additionally, cheetahs will hunt and kill easier prey. Namely the animals that are the slowest or least intelligent. A cheetah is a carnivore. Adult cheetahs may be found alone or in all-male groups called coalitions. Occasionally a non-related male may join into a coalition. Related coalition members spend much time in close proximity and groom each other.

The beginning of every food web is the sun. The sun sends energy to the producers, and the producers make that energy for primary consumers, and then the secondary consumers eat the primary consumers and so on. The point is that the sun is the most important part of the ecosystem, because without it, the whole ecosystem would collapse. Unlike if another organism went extinct, if the sun did explode or die out, the ecosystem wouldn't be able to adapt.

Hyena (Hyaenidae): Hyenas are predators who have a profound impact on the ecosystems within their habitats and ranges. Hyenas are social animals who sometimes work in groups to hunt prey larger than themselves. Hyenas are carnivores. The hyena displays greater flexibility in its hunting behavior than other African carnivores; it hunts alone, in small parties of 2–5 individuals or in large groups. During a hunt, spotted hyenas often run through herds in order to select an individual animal to attack.

Elephant (Loxodonta africana): Elephant’s niche plays a significant role in its ecosystem. Elephants dig water holes for other animals who don’t have a source of water, keeping them alive in such a hot, dry ecosystem. They also store water in their trunks and draw attention to small animals, which makes them easier victims for birds who need food. When they graze, their trunks take the bark off the trees. They also poop out seeds from plants they have eaten, letting more trees grow. Without elephants, many organisms wouldn’t survive in the ecosystem and biodiversity levels would be low.

Lion (Panthera leo): Lions are at the top of the food web. They are carnivores and eat a wide range of animals as illustrated. The lion species doesn't have a very unique role in the savanna ecosystem; they keep all of their prey's species populations under control--like most other consumers in the savanna. In addition, the lions keep the herds of animals strong by hunting and getting rid of the weaker animals of the herd so that only the strong and fast ones make up the herd, and they reproduce strong animals instead of letting the weak individuals live and reproduce more weak individuals.

Acacia: The acacia’s role in the Savanna is being food for the herbivores such as giraffes and rhinos. They provide food for these animals, and in turn the animals poop out the seeds and they continue the growth of the acacia trees. This demonstrates a mutualistic relationship between the acacia trees and the animals that eat them. If it weren’t for animals like giraffes and rhinos, who the acacias depend on for survival, the seeds would not disperse and the acacias would go extinct.

Scutch (Elymus repens): Scutch Grass has adapted to survive droughts, a major role in its ecosystem. Since this is one of the only organisms that can survive the droughts, they help keep the other animals alive that can’t survive droughts by absorbing large amounts of water and storing them. This way, the animals that eat these plants are hydrated during droughts. Then, the secondary consumers get water out of the primary consumers and so on. This is a great example of the flow of water in an ecosystem and how one organism’s adaptations can solve the problems of many species.

This benefits other animals and keeps a healthy balance within the ecosystem. If rhinos go extinct, it could be a huge problem to not only savanna lands, but other landscapes as well. Rhino grazing helps maintain savanna grasslands, which in turn supports numerous other species.

Fungi is a symbiotic associations with plants and bacteria. Most fungi are decomposers called saprotrophs. They feed on decaying organic matter and return nutrients to the soil for plants to use.
