A very good friend of mine, Hussam Kfouf, works with the United Nations and has great insight about the SDGs and their impact to the community and the world. When I asked him about which SDG he was most eager to work with, he astonished me with his answer! He expressed his passion for goal number 6 i.e clean water and sanitation, I was surprised with his answer because we don’t have water sources in Jordan nevertheless Hussam explained to me that through empathy and putting himself in other people’s shoes he could see how big the issue was worldwide and he told me how he doesn’t only work with the UN to help accomplish this goal he also strictly stopped using plastic products and non-biodegradable packaging and he explained how a change from one person would make a big impact towards the issue world wide.
-Sulieman B.

In a perfect life, we would love to fix the world; to save the environment, save all the animals, and create financial prosperity for all.

But life isn’t perfect.

How could it be, when your location on the globe determines your “luck” in life? When if you’re “lucky” enough, you are another statistic about how many people in X die because of lack of access to clean water each year? Or how many children in Y are forced into war and are forbidden from getting a proper education? Or how many children in Z are dying of malnutrition, or married off as minors because they were too much of a financial burden on their poor family? Or how many homes were destroyed that year and people left homeless?

These aren’t made up examples.

My grandparents were all refugees who fled from Palestine in 1967. My grandmother fled with 3 children and a newborn as a 21 year-old to a country she knew nothing about, with no relatives or friends to turn to. Had they not been born in Palestine, their lives may have turned out differently. My grandmother may have had the chance to learn how to read and write, and the children who weren’t lucky enough to flee may have led very healthy and prosperous lives elsewhere. And yet, even in 2021, the unequal opportunities based on geography still exist.

Why does geography make all the difference between a happy, healthy life, and a life without access to the basic needs of a decent human life?

Let’s save each other, and together we can work to save the world.

-Jenine, from Jordan

An impending national crisis. That is how I'd simply describe our water status at the moment. According to the UN, Jordan is the second most water scarce country in the world. This can be attributed to the arid MENA region. However, an influx of millions of refugees along with Jordan's rapid population growth, dire economy and minimal proactive measures taken by the water authorities early on has further exacerbated the situation.

Things seemed to be headed in the right direction for my country following the SDG goals set in 2015 and numerous targets have been achieved in terms of the collective SDGs. However, of the $466.8m funded by the UN, a mere 0.2% is allocated for clean water and only 1 out of the 85 UN activities being implemented is for SDG6. It is true that success across all SDGs is for the greater good and prosperity of my country and the world as a whole, but health and the essence of life itself should be prioritised over all else.

Since all of Jordan's fresh water has been exhausted, a few sustainable solutions that will hopefully provide for our future generations include:
1) Desalination plants in Aqaba - a city situated on the Red Sea
2) Wastewater treatment for its reuse in the Agricultural sector, which has previously used up to around 70% of our fresh water reserves in years past.
3) Educating our children on the importance of water use and integrating SDG activities into their school curricula.

Tareq AbuAlNadi, Jordan

At least Mary Ellen McNish is !!!
Individuals are living hungry, undernourished lives because the proper nutrients to sustain a healthy lifestyle is nonexistent. However, there are global organizations that focus on ending world hunger and one of the most influential organizations is The Hunger Project. The Hunger Project addresses that Today there are 821 million people who are chronically undernourished . Each year the number of people who are starving is steadily inclining and it needs to be stopped. Not only are
organizations helping to create change to this issue, but history proves that a single
individual can impact this issue for the better and may even change the world. Mary
Ellen McNish is one of the extraordinary individuals who inspired me and many others. McNish is the CEO and president of The Hunger
Project, and she travels the world to bring awareness to this issue.
What amazed me after watching an interview with McNish is her ability to empathize profoundly with those people who live in hunger. Not only that but also her hard work to solve this issue.
I love to quote from the interview :
The interviewer "hi Mary Ellen welcome to The Hunger Project just thought you would love to hear what brought you to this organization ?"
McNish "well thank you very much I'm so happy to be here ,the thing that brought me to the organization was once I started having conversations with people I realized how deeply I like helping people to help themselves!"
This is the empathy I was astonished by.
-Basil H.
Climate action -- Cindy, U.S. (Rochester)

The SDG I picked is climate action. With the way our environment has been vastly changing and how our climate is ever so quickly changing swiftly than usual, in some categories like the weather, I think it’s important that we act now to reverse the damage we’ve done, if possible. To continue our lineage and to make the world a better place, we should be keeping a close eye on our climate is changing, and how our choices have a large impact upon our climate. For example, one solution could be starting to use reusable bags, eliminating our use of plastic bags which has been prevalent here in Rochester. Although the change was a little difficult at first because we are creatures of habit, it’s become easier over a year down the road to make the switch. Though this is one small step toward climate action, it’s a solution that will greatly impact our plastic usage. Another solution that we can take toward climate action is using less energy! Not only does this save us money in the long run, but it’s also saving our climate and being conscientious of our choices that heavily impact our planet. Within this category, some other solutions that fall under this “umbrella” could be unplugging our technology cords when we aren’t using them, turning off lights when people aren’t home or perhaps even in the daytime when it’s sunny out. Even doing something small like changing to more energy-efficient light bulbs can make all the difference in our day-to-day lives, and potentially be saving our climate in the end game.

To practice empathy, I did some light research into looking into this SDG and specially, what Rochester is doing to take steps toward climate action! There is a plan in place by the City of Rochester, with a goal to take their greenhouse gas emissions down by 40% in the next 9 years. Within this plan, there are 5 categories that they are focusing on that involve residential, commercial, and industrial areas. In addition, at our own zoo in the area, an Earth Day event was held to spread the world about acting toward our climate. Included on their website, they had some tips to reduce our energy usage, including changing lightbulbs to LEDs, installing solar energy for homes, or things as small as composting, walking, or biking to work, school or other places, and using rainwater for flower beds. To include “teams in numbers”, some suggestions were carpooling with co-workers, using public transportation, and reducing energy usage (if possible) in the workplace. Even teeny tiny steps toward reducing our energy can make a HUGE impact in the long run. We are all in this together in this world, and if we don’t work together and connect with one another, we are more than likely not going to make suitable progress towards saving our climate. But, the more we listen and connect with each other, the more we can work together and take baby steps to making big changes that will benefit our planet and ourselves, as well as future generations to come.

Pandemic Year Marked by Spike in World Hunger

Hunger: an uncomfortable or painful sensation caused by insufficient energy from diet. Food deprivation; not eating enough calories. Used here interchangeably with (chronic) undernourishment. Measured by the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU).

Moderate food insecurity: a state of uncertainty about the ability to get food; a risk of skipping meals or seeing food run out; being forced to compromise on the nutritional quality and/or quantity of food consumed.

Severe food insecurity: running out of food; experienced hunger; at the most extreme, having to go without food for a day or more.

Malnutrition: the condition associated with deficiencies, excesses or imbalances in the consumption of macro- and/or micronutrients. For example, undernutrition and obesity are both forms of malnutrition. Child stunting or wasting are both indicators for undernutrition.

As outlined in last year’s report, transforming food systems is essential to achieve food security, improve nutrition and put healthy diets within reach of all. This year’s edition goes further to outline six “transformation pathways”. These, the authors say, rely on a “coherent set of policy and investment portfolios” to counteract the hunger and malnutrition drivers.

Depending on the particular driver (or combination of drivers) confronting each country, the report urges policymakers to:

Integrate humanitarian, development and peacebuilding policies in conflict areas – for example, through social protection measures to prevent families from selling meagre assets in exchange for food;

Scale up climate resilience across food systems – for example, by offering smallholder farmers wide access to climate risk insurance and forecast-based financing;

Strengthen the resilience of the most vulnerable to economic adversity – for example, through in-kind or cash support programmes to lessen the impact of pandemic-style shocks or food price volatility;

Intervene along supply chains to lower the cost of nutritious foods – for example, by encouraging the planting of biofortified crops or making it easier for fruit and vegetable growers to access markets;

Tackle poverty and structural inequalities – for example, by boosting food value chains in poor communities through technology transfers and certification programmes;

Strengthen food environments and changing consumer behaviour – for example, by eliminating industrial trans fats and reducing the salt and sugar content in the food supply, or protecting children from the negative impact of food marketing.

The report also calls for an “enabling environment of governance mechanisms and institutions” to make transformation possible. It enjoins policymakers to consult widely; to empower women and youth; and to expand the availability of data and new technologies. Above all, the authors urge, the world must act now – or watch the drivers of hunger and malnutrition recur with growing intensity in coming years, long after the shock of the pandemic has passed.

To practice empathy I fasted for 2 days because I know I will never truly know the pain of hunger or not knowing where my next meal is coming from. Only allowing myself water and coffee, after 3 days I already began to feel the effects. I was irritable, suffered confusion, slower comprehension, etc. I kept running into dilemmas that I have never even thought about being faced with before. These kind of dilemmas are faced daily for one in six Americans. This includes about 15 million children. The effects of children who grow up in homes who cannot afford food are tragic. These children are more likely to have chronic health conditions, stunted development, oral health problems, slower development, a higher risk of death, and more. About 5 million senior citizens are faced with hunger. This can cause a decrease in physical health such as diabetes, dementia, heart disease, and stroke, along with death. Not only does hunger effect physical health, but also mental health such as behaviors and social skills.

Only 63% of freshmen attending schools in the Rochester City School District can expect to graduate on time, based on the most recent data from the district. In my interview, my subject expressed concern about the high drop-out rate and had some ideas about how to get kids to stay in school. They thought this started with teachers. A higher salary might attract the right kind people to the profession and more fairly compensate those who do this important work. The fact that schools are funded by property taxes makes them inherently unfair in terms of resources. Low income neighborhoods with poorly funded schools provides unequal opportunity for a quality education

I picked Education system because every child has right to attend safe and have equal opportunities as other kids. Rochester schools are divided into suburban and urban schools where urban have larger number in poverty causing the school to have poor education system, more kids leaving schools, not enough programs. While the suburban does not face these problems and a large number from these schools graduate. I viewed an interview by Dr. Shaun Nelms and learned that UR-East High partnership helped schools from closing and the attendance is 85% which is improving. Still there is a lot of work need to be done. More programs need to be provided to urban schools to keep students in school and have better job skills after graduate. Also with education system I think it will help decrease poverty in our community.

Carly O’Keefe is the Coordinator of International Services at Monroe Community College. She has worked the entirety of her career specializing in helping students of international, immigrant, and refugee backgrounds find success in the bureaucratic jungle that is higher education. She believes wholeheartedly in the idea that a person’s specific actions have such a great impact on others as someone born and raised in Rochester, NY, a graduate of Penfield High School, having an Irish background, and Jewish upbringing. After experiencing COVID-19 pandemic she has seen the importance of combining the ideals of a collectivist cultures and pairing that with that of individualistic cultures, which she believes is the key to success for any culture. When it comes to the sustainability goals of IREX she strongly advocates for the rights and success for women, which she feels is centered around the ability to decide when to start a family. By being able to put off motherhood, Carly believes that women are afforded the opportunity to build and foster a career they would otherwise not have the chance to have. In doing so, this would allow women to have greater social mobility, better jobs, have a mindset of self-improvement, and most importantly plan their lives around ambitious educational and career goals like their male counterparts.
