People who are all of these qualities are going to get somewhere in life. For example if you are hard working you are guaranteed to earn respect by people. Loyalty is important because someone can love you and still cross you. He explains that knowledge is the only thing that cannot be taken away. This connects to the story because good education is not really something that can be found on a coal mine. Dr. Wernher von Braun strived to try and give Homer opportunities to get a good education to help him later on in life.  In the small town everyone likes certain things (football, etc) and it not many people had a very strong education because there was no need because they would most likely work in the mine or join the army.


The second quote by Miss Frieda Joy Riley describes how she has given us the book Rocketboys and wants us to learn from it. I think that Miss Frieda Joy Riley wants us to encourage our selfs to learn. She is trying to fuel our quest for knowledge. She is proclaiming we need to open out mind up and use the opportunities given to us. He loves his parents but It is clear that his father might not have a mutual feeling. Sonny is talking about his town and explains, “ I didn’t know my hometown was at war with itself over its children and that my parents were locked in a kind of bloodless combat over how my brother and i would live our lives” (Hickman 1).  Homer is explaining that he didn’t like how his parents constantly fight over them. homer’s father believes that they should live forever in Coalwood and the sons should play football. Sonny gets caught building a rocket near the mine with his friends and his father  asks who helped him “That’s none of your business little man. Now go up to your room and stay there until your mother gets home”(Hickman 96). You can tell by the way sonny’s father treats him that he doesn’t really respect him.
