The father was taken away in slippers and a bathrobe. The son is upset about this, but feels comfort in knowing that at least he wasn't taken away in "geta" like Tommy Tanaka's father.

As he is now being incarcerated because of being Japanese, he seems to be finding comfort in the fact that his father wasn't visibly labeled a "Japanese spy" through his slippers vs. the geta.

Summary: the brother couldn't fall asleep on the train, so he was talking to his sister about his dream of being a jockey; however, his sister said that the jockey is a small man, and the boy was unsure about this dream anymore.

Analysis: a small man is related to the Asian man stereotype. The boy didn't want to become a small man so he doubted his initial idea of becoming a jockey. The brother doesn't want to be stereotyped and he identifies more with the American culture. He may also have been influenced by his father, who took the masculine role in the family. The adults on the train were shouting "grow up to be a big American boy" to the brother. They wish him to identify more with American culture as they see him as a future generation who can escape by assimilation.

On the first day that the family arrived at the camp, the mother told the brother to "never say the Emperor's name out loud", yet the boy still whispered the Emperor's name Hirohito.

The mother is afraid that saying the Japanese emperor's name would cause trouble as it might become evidence of association with the Japanese government or being viewed. The boy was too young and immature to understand the significance and his mother's worries. Whispering Hirohito was a rebellious act against his mother as well as the repressive camp environment.

The mother had attempted to make them more "normal," sending them off to school with PJ&J and telling them they were Chinese if anyone asked. The boy agrees, and when later asked, he says he's a Chink, but as soon as he turns the corner, he yells, "I'm a Jap"(76). This is all happening before leaving for the internment camp, and it highlights his immaturity as he knew he shouldn't have said that out loud like he did. He knew that he may have gotten in trouble, yet he still decided to say it out loud.

the brother keeps having dreams of the emperor and just as he is about to see him in his dreams every time something goes wrong. In this case as he goes to open the final door in the series leading up to the emperor the door handle falls off. I think that this is important because you are not supposed to make eye contact with the emperor because he is referred to as a god.

I think this also connects to how the brother has a naive fascination with the emperor.

He is not connected to Japanese culture.

The brother had wanted to see horses on the train, but when he finally did see them, it seems like he wasn't satisfied but instead more sad or upset because they had to go. It might prove that the brother is naive because he isn't satisfied when was finally able to see the horses.
