Have worksheets of all the definitions they need to know for the topic they are doing right now. This allows them to learn something useful while still being punished. Instead of giving them sentence to write out 100 times.

This doesn't mean formal tests and exams everyday but instead using questioning/ observing students work to see if they understand the topic. By assessing the students informally throughout every class this ensures no student gets left behind.
