Simultaneously, make it more specific - so we can talk about how oppression/implicit bias/prejudice manifest more precisely (for example as racism or discriminatory treatment/disciplins of AA children in schools, particularly in terms of referrals and suspensions) and how we can build awareness (data - both qualitative and quantitative) that leads to meaningful action. 

Look at/acknowledge how our implicit bias manifests even when we are seeking to disrupt inequity (e.g., during this important presentation that is helping us think more critically about race, the gender binary was reinforced several times). This can be done in so many ways, but modeling our learning and acknowledging our mistakes/ignorance is a starting place. There is a lot to learn. Most of us will get something wrong or inadvertently reify (reproduce) oppression and marginalization on a fairly regular basis. How can we both create the space for us to be learners in all our glorious imperfection and build our capacity to disrupt unconscious bias that reproduces harmful constructs?

Finally, deep empathy. And an understanding of intersectionality. We are all holding different keys to power (it’s a keychain not a single key). Being woke regarding identities or experiences that we have personally experienced first hand doesn’t make us more compassionate or intelligent or unbiased than others. It’s hard not to see marginalization when you’re steeped in it every day. So imagine yourself in other people’s shoes as we have these conversations: if you are a person of color, imagine what kind of white person you might have been. If you are gay, imagine what kind of straight person you might have been - and by this I mean, recognize that your understanding of your own marginalization might be an artifact more of your personal experiences with oppression than of your character or ability to see injustice better than others. Resist self righteousness and indignation. Resist us/them thinking. Embrace humility. Embrace both/and. Be brave and speak your truth, but do it with compassion and humility.
