At the beginning of the book it talks about how Langley Research Center was growing rapidly due to demands for increased air power in an effort to defeat its enemies during World War II. Because men were involved in the military effort and white women were already working the jobs vacated by men, they turned to hiring black women to do the computing jobs at Langley. So Dorothy Vaughan, a highly intelligent black high school teacher, applied for a job at Langley. After a period of a couple months Dorothy received a letter from Langley saying that she was hire and will be paid twice the amount of a teacher. Since Dorothy and her husband were friends with the Colemans who had a daughter named Katherine. Katherine would later take a job at Langley as well.

The book takes place during World War Two, because of its huge impact it caused drafting. This meant not many men were available to work. Jobs were now opened to women. Although women were able to get an education and worked as hard as the men once did, they were still judged. I believe this is related to not only me but many females because we are not typically seen as the superior gender. Many people have lower expectations for us because of our gender. However, in the book the characters portrayed work hard and choose to ignore what people often say or expect. I think this is important because it encourages females to look past the stereotypes and what people say and do the best they can in all things.

Dorothy became the head of West Computing after Blanche Sponsler became ill and died. There she meet Mary Jackson who started work at Langley in a clerical position and later became a computer. As she became a computer she was sent to work on a project on the East Side. Which was the white computer side.
Later on Katherine Goble began working as a computer. There she was assigned to a job in the Flight Research Division. As she continues to work there she began an engineer training program, but first had to get permission to attend classes at Hampton High School, which was a segregated school. So she went to court and she was granted a pass and was shocked to see how shabby the white school was.
