The son of illiterate peasants, Ivan Gubkin since childhood, was possessed of brilliant abilities and a great desire to learn. The inspector of national schools helped the boy to enroll in Muromsky district school, and later in the pedagogical Seminary. After Gubkin five years served the people's teacher; then he entered the Petersburg mining Institute. 
After graduation (1910) he went to the Kuban — to research oil deposits. There found a previously unknown type of oil-bearing deposits where the oil reserves are not associated with a classic oil-bearing strata, and are local of petroleum formation. Gubkin called them pull-cord deposits.
