This seemed to frighten Percy and make him realize that he need help if he's going to be safe. We also see that at the end of the book Percy is told that the Titan Kronos is back and he gets betrayed by Luke and almost dies. We think that these revelations of how dangerous the world actually is to demigods would make Percy change his mind and decide to stay at Camp Half-Blood for protection.
