Native American groups were divided by geographic landforms (natural features), such as rivers and mountains. These two groups consisted of the Coastal Indians and the Plateau Indians. The Coastal people's most prominent feature was the Pacific Ocean; whereas, the Plateau people's most prominent feature was the Columbia River. These landforms affected the culture of the Plateau and Coastal people in very different ways. Because of the easy access to rivers and coastline of the Northwest, the Coastal Indians developed a rich and unique culture. In contrast, the lives of the Plateau Indians were shaped by the land (access to the mighty Columbia River) and climate (cold, snowy winters and hot, dry summers) of the Columbian Plateau.

Native Americans on both sides of Washington traded. They traded at inter-tribal trading sites such as Kettle Falls, Celilo Falls, and Dalles. They traded through gambling and bartering. Unfortunately, they also exchanged diseases. The Chinook tribe was the main trader of the coastal tribes. The Plateau tribes traded an even amount. Trading was huge part of both cultures.

Social Statusus of the Coastal and Plateau tribes (Pod 4)

The Coastal people: Wealth was determined by the amount of possessions. Wealthy families owned more canoes, tools, weapons, animal skins, and slaves. No person ruled over a group, instead councils met and made desicions for their people. Slaves (women or children) were usually stolen from other tribes. Slaves lived in the house with the family and did the hardest work. Some other social statuses in a community were chiefs, nobles, and commoners.

The Plateau people: The Plateau people had different roles for different genders, in an equal society. Different roles helped maintain balance in the different tasks that needed to be done. Females did the inside work such as preparing food, making clothes, gathering roots and berries, and caring for children. On the other hand men did the outside work such as hunting, fishing, making the house, and if nescecary going to war. Each gender was equal, such as females being able to decline or propose and marriage proposal.

As you can see each group had their own ways of living, and different social rankings with different jobs that needed to be done.
