Dred Scott was a slave living in Missouri. His owner took him to Illinois and then to Minnesota, which were both free states under the Missouri Compromise. Dred Scott and his owner came back to Missouri, and was sold to Sanford. Dred Scott sued Sanford for his freedom, claiming to be a citizen of Missouri, based on having obtained freedom by domicile for a long time in a free state.
The conflict was Can a slave be considered a citizen and become entitled to all the rights granted to citizens under the Constitution? The Court had a 7-2 in favor of the slave owner. Every justice submitted an individual opinion justifying his position, including Chief justice Taney. According to the Chief Justice, African Americans, slave or free, were not citizens. As a slave, Scott was property and had no right to bring suit in federal courts. The Dred Scott decision Caused protest against the Court and the administration of President Buchanan. The justices' plans to make a final, fair ruling that would settle the controversy over slavery backfired when Republicans charged that a “Slave Power” conspiracy extended into the highest ranks of government.
After the Supreme Court's decision, Emerson's widow sold Scott and his family to the Blow family, who freed them in May, 1857.

in 1829, After demanding political and military action on removing Native American Indians from southern America , President Andrew Jackson made this law on May 28, 1830. Even though it only gave the people the right to negotiate for their leaving from areas to the east of the Mississippi river and that relocation was supposed to be permissive, all of the pressure was there to make this all but unavoidable. All the tribe leaders agreed after Jackson’s election victory in 1832. The checks and balances did not function as they were supposed to, mainly because President Andrew Jackson completely ignored the surpreme courts decision, which should have been a check on his decision.

During the Watergate scandal and hearings, it was learned that President Nixon installed tape recorders in the office and recorded many conversations of his. Investigaters requested that he turn over the recordings, however, he declined, claiming he had executive Privilages and was exempt from turning over the tapes. The surpreme court later took up the case, and decided that Nixon had to turn over the tapes, and had no special privilages in this situation. This is an example of stable Checks & Balances because Even the President had to follow the laws we all follow, and limited government power.
