Billie Eilish influences me through her fast rise to top-chart tracks with the audio assistance of her brother Finneas. Throughout her career, I have seen evidence of Billie’s vocal improvement, and her range, along with control is something I aspire towards. Eilish and Finneas’ ability to create such unique audio in their songs while predominantly using only a home studio inspires me to get creative. This process also defines how various sounds can be manipulated or simply used in a different way to add brilliant depth to a piece of music.

Cosmo Pyke's blend of different genres and poetic lyrics are a heavy influence on the type of music I want to put into the world. The incorporation of jazzy elements to his very contemporary R&B style makes his music a different, but easy-to-listen experience. Pyke possesses the ability to challenge different genres when melding them together in his songs, hence giving him a wide variety in the music he distributes. This, along with lyrics that are basically poems in ballad form, compels me to dig deeper into composition when creating music.

Billie has been open on her admiration of Lana Del Rey for her entire career so far. However, in Interview Magazine (Eilish, 2023), Eilish got the chance to interview Lana in a one-on-one before the release of her new album, ‘Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.’ When listening to both singers' siren-like vocals, there is an obvious connection. However, in this interview Eilish delves deeper and remarks on how Lana’s "ability to write from a character’s point of view" in her songs was a game-changer when Billie started incorporating the same technique. Hence, songs like ‘Bellyache’, by Billie Eilish were written from the perspective of a serial killer.

Both Eilish and Finneas were originally inspired by The Beatles songwriting skills through their mother, Maggie Baird. “I always say it was actually the Beatles who taught them to write songs,” Maggie Baird says (Aswad, 2019). Being an actress and intermediate songwriter she was teaching a beginners songwriting class which both attended at the age of 12 for approximately 10 weeks. Baird notes that upon its conclusion, the two siblings immediately shot into writing songs separately before joining forces later on.

Billie and her brother Finneas have been a package deal since she started releasing music. However, Finneas is notorious for being the sibling who has stepped back to let his sister shine. I’ve put Finneas as an influence as he has been there to mix, master and produce all of Billie’s albums, along with assisting in songwriting and being an overall inspiration to her creative process. In one of many acceptance speeches Eilish has given, she notably thanks and acknowledges her older brother’s impact saying, “We started making music together when I was 13 and he was 17; he produces everything. He’s the only reason I’m anywhere in the whole world and he’s probably the only reason I’m alive.” (Harris, 2019)

Cosmo Pyke himself has stated that his “...sound is very jazz-influenced…” (The Inspiration behind a Multi-Instrumentalist, Cosmo Pyke - Whiteboard Journal, 2018) This gives understandable insight as to why he referenced Miles Davis as one of his greatest inspirations. Being an American Trumpeter and Composer, Davis had a major impact on what Jazz is to this day. His contributions to this great genre have surely not only impacted on Pyke’s love for Jazz itself, but also his want to mix genres and create new fusions of music.

Cosmo Pyke has noted the 80’s hip-hop/rap group ‘A Tribe Called Quest’ in several interviews as an influence to his music making process. By briefly diving into the type of songs the group has made, it’s predicted that his inspiration comes from their new-age alternative merging of hip-hop and jazz. (Eary, 2017) When asked about the creation of his most well-known song, ‘Chronic Sunshine’, Pyke responded with the remark, “It was just all about bars…”, after relating his wordplay to ‘A Tribe Called Quest’, along with some other rap artists.

Jimi Hendrix has undeniably been a great inspiration for many instrumentalists, especially regarding guitarists. Being a multi-instrumentalist, Pyke has grown up surrounded by music, and has commented on Hendrix being an influence on his creative process. In an interview Pyke did before the release of the song ‘A Piper for Janet’, Pyke was asked about his musical influences and how they shape his sound, which Pyke responded by referencing several influences, including Jimi, and tying them all together saying, “Basically anything black - I love black music.” (The Inspiration behind a Multi-Instrumentalist, Cosmo Pyke - Whiteboard Journal, 2018)
