Greenpeace

Greenpeace works around the world addressing many areas of environmental and conservation concern. The area that interacts with my own work is campaigning to protect the Great Barrier Reef. Greenpeace is quite savvy in the way they utilise the media to share their messages. They employ media and communications staff to work on specific campaigns. These staff find 'real people' who are affected by things life coral bleaching to speak to media, they also employ their own scientists who are trained in speaking to the media. Recently I received a letter from Greenpeace seeking donations to fund a Reef Survey. I wrote to them and asked why they would be seeking funds to do a Reef Survey at a time that the AIMS are struggling to continue to fund their Reef survey that has run annually for more than 20 years. Greenpeace staff responded to my mail informing me that the intent of their 'survey' was to take journalists out to the GBR to show the impact of coral bleaching first hand. A very savvy media strategy, far more impact than a media release and a few photos! Of course such a strategy results in numerous stories in sympathetic media. I'm not sure that it would have been quite as successful with the murdoch press, due to Greenpeace being the conduit.
