As future teachers it's important to realize that no two students will ever be the same. They will not look the same, act the same, learn the same, or have the same story. There is no "mold" for what a student should be like and as teachers we should not expect there to be. It's our job to have be accepting of people no matter who they are, what their skin color is, or how they act.

I think there's no denying that at some point in all of our life's we have all done that. Maybe not intentionally, and maybe we did not mean it in a bad or mean way. I think it's part of human nature to gravitate towards those who we believe we have a connection with or have similarities with. It is something that we all need to work on, because embracing the differences that we have with others will not only benefit ourselves, but our societies as well.

This could not be farther from the truth. We cannot expect our students to go through a traumatic experience at home, then pretend that everything is fine when they step onto school property. When I read this quote the first thing that comes to my mind is the saying, "Sometimes the brightest smiles hide the deepest secrets, the most beautiful eyes have cried the most tears, & the kindest hearts have felt the most pain (Anonymous)." As teachers we only see children during their 8 hours with us, we never know if some of those children go home to abusive parents, go home with no food, or have no home to go to at all. Those types of things are things that we cannot expect our students to just ignore when they get to school. We should strive to be not only their teacher, but their counselor, a source of refuge, and their friend.

I my opinion this is an extremely deep quote. It saddens me to think that the only happy place some children have is in their own imaginations. We never know the circumstances that some children are going through, and we may never know. Our goal should be to make our classrooms a happy escape for those children as well, not just their imaginations.

When I read this, the quote "never judge a book by it's cover ( Lester Fuller Edwin Rolfe)" comes to my mind. Children shouldn't feel as though we think they are invisible or think that we just assume that they are a bad kid, because they acted out once or twice. We have no idea what their life outside of those school walls looks like, so we shouldn't be so quick to judge. They could have acted out because they were tired from going to school all day, then working all night, or maybe they come from an abusive home, or maybe they just lost their home? The truth is we never know, so we cannot just make an assumption about a person.

As teachers we need to figure out how to bring the excitement that those children felt when doing their rap cypher into the classroom. However like Ken Robinson from the video says, we are too focused on drilling the information from the subjects into our students heads, that we are robbing them of their creativity. Robinson believes that our society has gotten to a place where we discourage any hopes that children have of having a job that lets them be creative. Therefore this leads to us not incorporating any creativity into our classrooms and leaving our children unenthusiastic about what they are learning.

I feel like this quote from the book has such a powerful message. In the context of the book this quote simply referred to just taking turns when speaking, but when you read it out of context the message is so much more powerful. Maria fought for those people from poorer communities to have an equal say as those from richer communities, because everyone deserves to have a chance to speak. Whether it be in having a say in political matters or simply just when speaking in the classroom everyone deserves to voice their opinion and be heard.

"One of the chief goals of coteaching in reality pedagogy is to train the teacher to teach in a way that reflects the needs of the student by creating classroom spaces where teachers are being trained by their students." Pg.87

As future teachers we have to keep in mind that we do not know everything, and as we grow older we lose a lot of the creativity that we possessed when we were younger. This is why like Adora Svitak says, we must learn from our students. How can we teach something that involves creativity if we no longer possess it? This is where our students expertise comes into play. Svitak says that "adults often underestimate kids abilities." She also believes that we should establish classroom rules with our students, not just for them. By doing this we will be placing ourselves on a more equal level, and therefore we will enable ourselves to learn more from our students like Christopher Emdin believes we should be doing as well.

"To develop and foster a cosmopolitan ethos in the classroom, one of the first things a teacher must do (ideally at the beginning of the academic year or a new semester) is to identify the possible roles that everyone who comes into the classroom can take on to help it function properly." Pg.107)

Our classroom is going to be like a mini community. If everyone is doing their job things will run smoothly, however if jobs are not being completed, then things can become chaotic. Emdin and Amanda Leger both have similar beliefs about the benefits of classroom jobs. These beliefs are that it can be beneficial for students to be given these responsibilities. It will teach them that if they do not complete their jobs that it can cause disruptions in the classroom and there can be repercussions. Also it gives the students a sense of purpose and enjoyment knowing that they have such important jobs to complete.

I found this quote to be extremely powerful, because this is what we as teachers, should want our students to do. This chapter was primarily about getting students from different cultures to work together in a way that will allow them to learn from each other. Like Michael Gavin explains, the problem with our society today is that we are not taking the time to learn about other cultures. Therefore these cultures are dying over time and we are losing our cultural diversity. This is why it is so important that we do encourage our students share their culture and learn from others like Emdin suggests, so that we do not allow cultural diversity to die.
