It caused depression but parents hoped their children would remember them and return when they grow up. Many parents lost contact with their children and attempted to visit them.
What does loss of identity mean?

Loss of identity is circumstance and feeling. In the missions sometimes they were given numbers and they were called after that number or they where given new names. They would forget who their families and parents were and they were lead to belive other things. If they were taken at a very young age they would forget their families and be brought up in different ways.

The governemnt from 1910 to 1970 took "half caste" children away from their families. They were trying to wipe out the indigenous people evenatually. They called this policy the assimaltion policy. Half caste children had an indigenous parent and a white parent. They were brougth up in missions, churches and schools. They would be forced to forget their old culture and families.

What did the 1997 Bringing them home report find?

This report found that some of the kids got taken from their parents and put into a mission/school. When they were at this mission/school some of them remembered their parents and would cry to themselves. For some people, they got captured at age 8- 12 so they knew who their parents were and sometimes it would get so bad ( that they would feel so depressed) that they would cry themselves to sleep. For the parents, i think that it was harder fo them if they were younger children because they would possibly never know them or know that they were taken away from their families. But most people would feel so sorry for the kids that were taken from ages 3 - 6 because they would be the most confused/ scared. But all in all, i think that both the parents and the kids were both devastated that they were taken away from family. Also, most of the kids that got taken away didn't want to come back home because the white people put many bad thoughts about them in their heads that made them scared of them or that they just didn't remember them which would break their parents heart.
