"If we have a sense of the emotions we're likely to feel as we move through the learning process, we'll be better equipped to manage them along the journey" (224). I found this interesting because it directly connects to some research I had previously read and applied to our research project in ELA. It was about how as you start researching a topic of personal interest, you may feel very confident that you already know a lot about it. As you read more resources and learn, you become less sure of yourself and more interested in learning more.

In Chapter 4, the anecdotal story about negative talk in the faculty room reveals an unfortunate downside that I have witnessed as well. One time, about 10-12 years ago, the negative chat in the faculty room from one person was so bad, that it was tough to go into the room. It reveals a double-edged sword. In the chapter, the negative chatter involved faculty members talking badly about certain students' futures because of the poor environment that surrounds the child at home. I viewed that story as a double-edged sword. It is necessary for teachers to be aware of the environment students live in because if we want to reach them, we need to know what obstacles they face. Those obstacles are not always about math computation skills and vocabulary acquisition, but about their basic needs being neglected at home. It's heart-breaking, obviously. At the same time, though, teachers should be striving to break the negative cycle that some students live in. In that anecdotal story, some teachers appeared to be adding to the cycle. Not good.

Learners embrace their naturally curious disposition and view obstacles and challenges as opportunities for growth. Any time we ask ourselves, "What can I learn from this moment? From this challenge? our perception of the experience changes. When you are curious, you are open to ideas and you pursue solutions, trying almost anything and for asking for help along the way. That's what resilient people do, and often it it's curiosity that is compelling these actions.

I highlighted and starred this quote from Matthew Lieberman on page 97, "Social connection is our primary need and should be at the base of Maslow's pyramid." He continues, "Love and and belonging might seem like a convenience we can live without, but our biology is built to thirst for connection because it is linked to our most basic survival needs." This continued to amaze me as I read how the Kenyan refugees endured a week of hunger to afford a phone call to connect with loved ones. They choose community over food! I feel very strongly about this research as I survive because of connection of loved ones. I too believe (at least from a mother/teacher standpoint) that I often give up physical nourishment to be there emotionally for my family or students' needs.

I liked the activity of "Asking a Question." This past Sunday, our Gospel message at church was about the wedding at Cana where the wine ran out. During the Gospel homily, our priest talked about how we often feel in our lives how the wine has run out. In our relationships, our jobs, etc. He told a resonating story about how a man went to his primary physician asking him questions like , how do I know I'm in the right place? In the right job? The doctor then asked him where was the last place he felt happy. And the man replied down the seashore on the beach. So the doctor told him to drive there the next day with no noise: no radio, no cell phone, just silence. The doctor wrote him some "prescription notes" and when he sat on the beach, he read a note every few hours. The notes told him "to listen", "to make space" and "to write your worries in the sand." I just thought this was so powerful. I find myself asking similar questions as this man -struggling with my place in this great big world. But I also feel that if I try hard to shut off the noise and listen, and make space for God and prayer, I'll start to receive some guidance and answers.
