The poem shows a parent talking about their family’s situation during the pandemic. It depicts how grave their suffering is with their lack of food supply and how desperate they are to survive. These are seen through how the parent thinks of solutions to help maximize their food left such as adding more cups of water to their lugaw, eating less, and even skipping meals completely. It is also illustrated how they cannot do anything about their situation but bear it because of the quarantine restrictions as well as lack of resources.

The persona is the person Gina is talking to. The tone of this person is very melancholic due to the way they describe their situation in the poem. The poem also made me feel disheartened due to the mood it evokes in the readers. Furthermore, the speaker can be described as someone highly desperate to stay afloat during the pandemic. Given the descriptions of their lifestyle, the speaker struggles to find ways to do so, emphasizing their poor financial situation as well as a shortage of food supply.

1. Metaphor - “Do you honestly think that we would be able to stretch our patience our faith our body our limits and for how long?”

This part of the poem illustrates how dire their situation is. It shows how desperate the persona is to survive through the pandemic given the circumstances they are in. Physically and mentally, they are giving up. The speaker does not know how much longer they may last physically without getting sick because of the intense hunger they feel. They are simply just trying their best to bear with it until it passes. Furthermore, the situation they are in also takes a toll on them mentally. With the way it is being described in the poem, it is evident that the whole family is deeply saddened, and even enraged because the resources available to help them are very limited.

2. Hyperbole - “Staring out windows looking at dust collect while we desperately wait for this dizzying tide of hunger to go away?”

Here, their hunger is being described as a "dizzying tide". The speaker uses tides to describe this because tides are very-long periods of waves that move through the ocean. These waves also vary in size, some may be larger to scale than others just like how their hunger strikes them. This goes to show how much they lack food supply, therefore experiencing severe hunger. Furthermore, this line shows that they are unable to do anything about it but stare out the window and bear the intense hunger they feel.

3. Important Line - "What's so right in being this poor? What's so right in suffering silence? Gina tell me is it wrong? Are we wrong? Are we asking too? Gina, are we asking too many questions?"

This last part of the poem is very impactful as it shows just how much they are suffering in the pandemic. The speaker rambles through their thoughts, struggling to find answers to their problems because it is simply too difficult to handle. It shows how they are unable to do much due to the limited amount of resources available.

The most impactful part of this line is the lance sentence, "Gina are we asking too many questions?". The purpose of asking questions is so that we find answers to our thoughts. However, it is evident in the poem that answers to their thoughts and problems were not found. Time and time again, the speaker illustrates to the readers the magnitude of their situation, hoping to find a solution. In the end, it seems as if there is no hope anymore, thus asking one last question which may be seen as the speaker giving up or being "the last stretch".

I believe that the theme of the poem revolves around how bad the poor and marginalized in our society are affected in times of hardship. Throughout the whole poem, it was evident how severe the situation was for the whole family. I believe that the poem speaks for most, if not all those who belong to the lower social classes, striving to survive when hit with adversity. This is seen through the figures of speech stated previously wherein it describes the gravity of the circumstances they are under. As seen in the lines provided, they were left to suffer by those in power and those who have more resources available to them ever since the start of the lockdown. Part of this may be blamed on the government due to how inefficient the COVID-19 response for the country was. Little to no aid was given to those who were in dire need of it because of the lack of funds present for it. Due to this, the poor and marginalized are the ones most affected by these situations which restricts them from the privileges those in the higher social classes may experience.

The poem is still very much relevant in the context of our society today because it is still being experienced by some of our fellow countrymen. With the pandemic still occurring, there are still those who are striving to earn different sources of income after being removed from their jobs. There are also those who are still thinking if the remaining rice in the fita bin would be enough to feed a whole family. Worse, there are still those who have nothing left, patiently waiting for assistance from the government which may possibly never come. The implications of the situation being described in the poem go beyond the context of the pandemic. These may include typhoons, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and the like wherein those in the lower social classes are the most affected. It is sad to see that innocent lives are suffering due to the incompetency and selfishness of some government officials, however, this is what is happening today. Upon reading the poem, it made me realize how some are in desperate need and how these were not given emphasis at the start of the pandemic until now. If the government truly acted competently, then I believe that no Filipino would experience suffering at a scale this large and severe.

The poem perfectly exemplifies the sad reality we live in. It shows how far some are willing to stretch themselves physically and mentally in order to survive . It shows how some who are willing to forego a basic human need, eating, just to have enough food left for the whole family. This personally angers me because I find it unfair how those in power, those who make decisions in our country are able to live happily and peacefully at the expense of others. They do not realize that what they do affects millions of people in the country. It also angers me that those who live innocently and work harder than some of those who are able to eat 3 meals a day are the ones desperately trying to survive due to the selfish decisions of others. Those who would disregard what the lower social classes experiences just because they don't experience the same.

The poem was disheartening to read. It was disheartening in a way that it hurts to see other people experience suffering at an extreme level. It hurts to see that they would sacrifice eating just to save food for tomorrow or for the children, and just bear their starvation for the day. It also hurts that they are forced to stay inside despite clearly having a shortage of food, may it be because of the quarantine restrictions or simply not having the means to buy.

As Filipinos and children of God, I believe that it is essential for all of us to come together in times of need. We should be there for one another because we are all brothers and sisters. Love should be at the center of our actions regardless of what the situation may be. As Filipinos, we should exhibit "Bayanihan" and push for change in the government and community. With this, it ensures that no one will be left behind and we will all prosper with the change that caring for one another gives.
