World War One began in 1914. It took place in Europe and the two sides of the war were the Allies (Russia, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Serbia, and the United States) vs the Central Powers (Germany, Austria- Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire). The Allied powers won the war and as a consequence of that, the countries signed a treaty called the treaty of Versailles. This treaty stated that Germany had to take full responsibility of the war. A consequence that Germany received was Germany had to pay over 50 billion dollars of reparations. To pay these off, Germany started to print more bills.

Collapse of the German Economy

Germany fell into a deep debt after the Treaty of Versailles was signed. The reason for this was because part of the treaty was to pay off war reparations. To try and quickly pay off the debt, Germany started to print more bills. This did not help Germany at all. In fact, as a result of this, the German economy started to collapse. Before World War One started, 4.2 German Marks equaled 1 USD. In 1923, 4.2 trillion German Marks equaled 1 USD. It became to hard for parents to buy their children toys so the parents gave their kids stacks of bills to pay with instead. Workers had to show to work with wheelbarrows to collect their food. As a result of this Germans began to get mad at and question their government. Adolph Hitler had an opportunity.

Adolph Hitler was a very powerful speaker. He spoke publicly and captivated his audiences with promise for change. Hitler appealed mostly to lower and middle class Germans. The Nazis rose to power very quickly. In 1924, the Nazis won only 3% of the vote. By 1932, the Nazis won 33% of the vote and had more votes than any other party in Germany. On January 30, 1933. From this point on, Hitler started to make laws persecuting against Jews and laws to get more Nazis into the government. On August 2, 1934, Paul von Hindenburg, the president of Germany died and Hitler and the Nazis gained almost full control of the government.

As Hitler started to slowly but systematically took over Germany, he slowly started to take over Germany. The Nazis stopped serving Jews in their shops and burned their books. Up until Kristallnacht, these acts were mostly non violent. On the night of November 9, 1938, Nazis torched and vandalized Jewish schools, homes, stores, hospitals businesses, and especially synagogues. They also killed over 100 Jews. This became known as Kristallacht or night of the broken glass.

Part of what the Nazis did that was so bad was they killed millions of Jews. To do this, Nazis put them into death camps and then burned their bodies. One of the biggest of such camps was Auschwitz. Auschwitz is located in Poland near the Polish-German border. At Auschwitz, the Nazis killed over 1.2 million people, almost 1 million of those people were Jews. The Holocaust was where the Nazis killed over 6 million Jews. The Nazis used camps like Auschwitz to do most of the killing. The Nazis were so obsessed with killing Jews that they would hunt down the Jews that escaped their clutches. After the Nazis were stopped, many Nazi leaders were sentenced to death at the Nuremberg trials.
