Dual thinking

I've attached a quote from Scheffer et al., 2015 about dual thinking: "One could speculate that thinking outside the box might be facilitated by having a somewhat less intact box (de Manzano et al., 2010).

This quote made me laugh, but I also think it has important implications for geography. In geography we study things that are visible (i.e. the landscape) and invisible (i.e. space, distribution of power/wealth/influence), whic aren't always linear or easy to understand. In order to think about these things creatively and meaningfully, we need to think about them beyond the mainstream criticisms/paradigms, for which we can think outside of the box, or remove the box (i.e. constraints) altogether.
