Rhode Island. If you have ever visited, lived, or at least seen anything about Rhode Island, you’d be aware of the large presence of Hispanic/Latino communities that are largely in Providence. Today, we will be discussing the historical background of why my interviewees are found in the neighbourhood of Washington Park. From the original demographics to the reasons behind their changes.

Washington Park is one of the twenty-five neighbourhoods in Providence today. It was originally in the 1600s, land owned by Roger Williams, according to Wikipedia, homes began to be built in the area around the 1800s to 1900s, likely housing colonists like Roger Williams, mainly. It grew as a neighbourhood after World War I due to industrial developments. It gained its name from a horse track built in that area. Later, it was found that the demographic consisted of Irish-American and Portuguese communities. According to “the City of Providence (.gov)”, in the 1960s, before the slow increase in Hispanic/Latino population, Irish families lived in Washington Park due to the construction of Interstate 95. The population is mostly working-class, half-white with a mix of still Portuguese, Dominican (other Hispanic communities), and Irish communities that you can find have parades and businesses still today.

The trace of Hispanic demographics at roughly 1960 wasn’t directly found due to the data collection consisting of “white” and “other”. [Nuestrasraicesri.net/LatinosinRITimeline1960-1979] Two years later, however, Cubans began taking refuge in Rhode Island. Between 1962-1969, Hispanic and Latino families and businesses began to appear within Washington Park and other Providence neighbourhoods. Specifically, why more families began to migrate to New England is likely the political turmoil in their home countries. Many Dominicans moved due to Rafael Trujillo (El Jefe) being assassinated in 1961, who was a ruthless dictator in the Dominican Republic. The Latino population is up to about 44% due to the idea of sanctuary in the New England region.

Providence, especially Washington Park, is a prime example of the Hispanic/Latino diaspora, for its historical timeline of the increase of the demographic and general growth over the years as an established neighbourhood in Providence.
