Technology provides visualization and virtualization. We can see things that previous generations could not (visualization), and we can very cheaply and easily create "sandboxes" in which to explore and test theories and understanding that previous generations could not. Both of these things speed learning and understanding to help cement building blocks in place for future exploration. Technology in the classroom also provides an environment in which children can have equal access to these modern tools when they might not have them available at home.

Strictly speaking, technology has been used in classrooms since classrooms were invented. The Romans drew on individual tablets to practice writing, and we draw on electronic tablets for the same purpose. Technology has always been used, and is essential to the classroom.

As long as it isn't a distraction, technology can help magnify the impact or streamline a lesson. But we should be careful because technology itself cannot replace the importance of a good lesson foundation. That only comes from focused effort into planning and execution. -Dan K.

My high school calculus teacher had a smart/tech savvy class room. He was able to pre record a weeks worth of lessons, complete with voice over from him as you watched the cursor on the screen complete the math problem, just as if he was really there. It was super helpful when he had to go out of town for that week. We could still keep up on the curriculum and have the benefit of a trained math teacher explaining the concepts instead of attempting to have a sub explain.
