6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The central idea of the poem is death without doing enough good/ having a purpose in life. Emily talk about doing noble and generous acts of kindness and how if she can do at least one nice act she will live with purpose. Emily was a closed off and very introverted woman. She never really made any kind of connection with people. In this poem she talk about the feeling of not being able to make those connections and help other people and how she feels because of her lack of this she will live a life without purpose. (Melanie Lima)

1. What is the Poem Tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the Poem ironic

The poem tone is a sad, gloomy, and depressing woman who is hurting that she can't help her loved ones and is very concern. Words that reveal the tone are '' If I can stop one heart from breaking, '' I shall not live in vain and '' If I can ease one life the aching''. This poem is not ironic and is mostly based on a broken heart who is desperately needed a purpose in life and displaying an act of kindness.

5. Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?

One symbol I could find was the Robin. A robin is a universal symbol, specifically in British and French folklore. The central idea of the poem is trying to live a life with purpose. She talks about how she want her purpose to be something along the lines of helping others or doing an act of kindness to other living things, like a "fainting robin". A robin symbolizes rebirth and renewal; almost like a second chance. A second chance for Emily to make connections with other people and living things and to find her purpose and fulfill it.
4. What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

The figures of speech are being used in this poem are metaphor, and personification. They contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem because in the poem she compare the heart as a detail of breaking in the first line. This describe that her heart is in pain and damaged. Then, she use words like vain, pain, and heart to express the meaning of the poem and explain how she is helpless and having no puropse in life if she can't help others.
