When him and Johnny noticed Dally treating his new friend inappropriately they stood up because they did not want to see their friend suffer. The author wants the reader to feel that Ponyboy is not rough like the rest of the greasers and has a sense of charm and innocence that others lack.

S.E. Hinton develops friendship in the Outsiders by making the characters chose hard decisions to maintain friendships and protect their friends. For example tough characters such as Dally and Darry show a more caring and selfless side when someone they care about is in trouble. The author also uses the loss of innocence of characters such as Ponyboy and Johnny to grow their friendship and include heroic sacrifices to save each other and their friendship. Change in ideals also evolves friendship as Ponyboy realizes he is different than the greasers and feels like he does not long and slowly shifts his valued to more of the socs at tensions with the greasers and traumatic events happen. Every time the reader thinks that they know a character a new side of the character is shown when they are involved in a conflict, the author develops characters by showing thier strenghts in weakness' in conflict.. The author uses sacrifice and loss of innocence to develops characters emotions and friendship.
