He established Singapore as a free port, set up defense positions at the Singapore River, prevented disease outbreaks and laid roads.

William Farquhar faced a challenge; the fear of being attacked by others.

However, William went against Raffles' orders and sold licenses for gambling and the sale of opium and liquor. William was the reason that Singapore grew into a bustling marketplace.

William Farquhar was the Major General of the Honourable East India Company and Madras Engineer Corps who served in the East Indies upwards of 33 years.

Farquhar was appointed to officers of high responsibility under the civil government of India and served as the Resident in Malacca and afterwards at Singapore which later settlement he founded.

William Farquhar was the real builder of modern Singapore. While Raffles signed the treaty, Farquhar stayed behind, managed the settlement, welcomed migrants, and made practical decisions that helped it grow fast. Raffles got the credit, but Farquhar did the work.

His contribution had a great impact on the traders. It acted as a natural sheltered habour , good supply of drinking water and a halfway port between India and China.
