William was the reason that Singapore grew into a bustling marketplace.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>We think that Sir Stamford Raffles was the true founder of Singapore as he was the one who appointed Major William Farquhar and founded Singapore. He made sacrifices to establish Singapore into a successful trading port known to many.</p><p>. Raffles contributed to the establishment of Singapore as a trading port</p><p>. He sacrificed his reputation to found Singapore going against the colonial's wishes to not set up a trading port elsewhere. He also wanted to make selling opium and alcohol illegal but had to sacrifice that decision as well.</p><p>. Singapore gained popularity and money from being a successful trading port. Now Singapore is one of the world's most advanced country thanks to Raffles and our founding fathers. </p><p><br></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Source 3: They come into the country without needing to pay tax so farquhar give tax for people that did the bad stuff and raffles think that what he was doing wasn't right and john agreed with Farquhar. Even though in the beginning the taxes thing was legal and now it isn't legal so now this might have caused the cause of the ban of drugs.</p><p><br></p><p>Source 2: Raffles was the lieut. governor of Java and the first President of the Zoological Society of London. He raised Java to happiness and prosperity. He founded Emporium at Singapore where in establishing freedom of person as the right of soil and freedom of trade as the right of port. He labelled successfully to add to the knowledge and enrich the museum of his native land.</p><p> </p><p>Source 1:  Raffles was one of the people given credit for the founding of Contemporary Singapore. He Shut down gambling dens, which have been a source of income during Farquhar term as resident. Now there are not as many gambling dens and Raffles helped the Singapore Government. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Farquhar was the first and only official to hold the dual posts of Resident and commandant in Singapore.  He initiated the search for a new post and negotiated the commerical treaty with Riau that laid the groundwork for Hasting's instructions to Raffles to establish a new post. Even though Raffles had a higher  responsibility for Singapore, it was Farquhar who built the settlement from scratch into a successful port.</p><p><br/></p><p>His contribution had a great impact on the traders. It acted as a natural sheltered habour , good supply of drinking water and a halfway port between India and China.</p>]]></description>
