I want to do work that genuinely matters and has a positive impact on people and communities. I like helping individuals take responsibility for their actions while being supported to make real, lasting changes in their lives. I enjoy challenges and like the fact that each day can be different.

I joined the service as this job suits my personality, I have always wanted to support others and my patience and empathetic nature has always allowed me to connect with a variety of different people with different needs/behaviours, those that people are likely to have given up on or dismissed in the past. I am very proud of the job I do and to make a difference to people's lives.

I joined the Probation Service as it felt like a natural progression in my career. I enjoy the responsibility the role brings and I feel I can positively contribute to society by rehabilitating people who have offended and / or protecting the public from further harm. I also applied to work for probation as it offered greater salary / career progression than my previous role.

I applied for Probation services to have a meaningful job whereby I can make a difference to someone's life whilst also protecting individual's from harm. I feel that 'offenders' are labelled and can struggle with rehabilitation and would like to help them to the best of my abilities. I applied because everyday is different and not monotonous which aligns with my needs. I find the Criminal Justice system fascinating and something I am passionate about which will help me to support others.

I applied to work for the Probation Service because I strongly believe in second chances. I want to support people to make positive changes and improve their lives. I am motivated to help individuals reduce reoffending by encouraging responsibility, growth, and better choices. I believe this role allows me to make a real difference while supporting public safety.

If I reflect honestly, I applied for the role on a whim; not sure I would be eligible or have the right qualifications. I’ve never thought about working within the probation services. When I read the job description that offered both career progression and was person centred, I couldn't resist. Probation Officer was not on my job role prospects growing up, nor was it present at jobs fairs. It sounded like a niche role that would allow me to combine my 10 years’ experience supporting others in their progression, vocationally and then further with their mental health requirements. I predicted the job role would allow me to navigate my own educational development and prioritise my ability to evoke change. The more research I did, preparing for the interviewing process, I realised I was driven to support others. A job role that would test me psychologically, alongside, challenging my perception of what rehabilitation looks like. I was driven to challenge what a pro-social lifestyle looks like and the foundation it is built on. Creating a safer environment for my community felt possible. I felt motivation I had never considered in the past; I applied as I recognised that I would have the opportunity to weave a career path that is meaningful, one conversation at a time.

I wanted a change in my career where I was still able to use the skills I have developed in my life so far. I didn't know what to expect but I had someone close who was a Probation Officer and I thought she was a wonderful person. I always admired her non-judgmental approach to situations, her love of people whatever their background, her acceptance and ability to guide people to recognise and use their own strengths to progress through life's challenges. I would like to develop my own skills to best support others in challenging situations develop theirs so they can change their paths towards positive outcomes. I wanted a career which challenged and stretched me and I have certainly found one.

I had a job that I loved, but after the birth of my first child negotiating with overseas factories in impoverished countries felt like exploitation. My previous role paid over £10k more and I got quarterly bonuses which paid for my holiday each year, but the money was meaningless as I was miserable! I have a strong sense of justice and believe people have the capability to change so working in probation fits my morals perfectly. I also know I need variety and pressure in my job role as I don't cope well with boredom and repetition.

I have always felt that that a career with purpose is an essential ingredient to a meaningful life. This in conjunction with a desire to challenge myself and develop professionally is what has taken me to the Probation Service.
