It is hard to find an equivalent word in English, but the most suitable term is language system. According to Gordon, language is the social manifestation of speech. Language is a system of signs that evolves from the activity of speech. In other words, langage is a social concept which needs a community of speakers.

As part of their intuitive knowledge of langue, members of a speech community share possession and comprehension of a body of signs (signes). According to Saussure, a sign consists of two components: a signifier (signifiant) and a signified (signifié). Linguistic signs can encompass words, units of grammar, and expressions.

The signifier is a sound or series of sounds, and the signified is the meaning that the sounds represent.
