Sooo… Jem broke his arm near age thirteen, with his injured arm healing not hindering his football aura. The narrator and others discuss the accident’s origins, then delves into Finch family history: Simon Finch, a fur-trapper and apothecary, fled persecution, settled in the US, practiced medicine, owned slaves, and built Finch’s Landing, a self-sufficient cotton-based farmhouse. Family men typically stayed there, but Atticus left for law school, his brother for medicine, while Alexandra remained. Eventually, Atticus returned to Maycomb to practice law, with Maycomb being the county seat near Finch’s Landing.

The author uncovers more details by the discussion of “who started it all”, and mentions names of character and their ancestors. The main character then explains the history of Simon Finch, their ancestor who had “died rich”.

The injury healed, and Jem wasn’t bothered by it much afterward.

– hinting at the author’s economic state and environment: being able to have medical care for the arm (middle class?, having a stable job from parents), and playing football.

Reveals Jem's personality: careless, wild, young.

Author's style: description of unconventional viewpoint

By bringing a family history rooted in Simon Finch——an ancestor who established Finch's Landing, then moving to England. Over time, the Finch family remained at the Landing, though it became a symbol of shame due to their ties to slavery. This introduces the story’s background in a glimpse, without mentioning important key events.

Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square. Somehow, it was hotter then: a black dog suffered on a summer's day; bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square. Men's stiff collars wilted by nine in the morning. Ladies bathed before noon, after their three-o'clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum.

People moved slowly then. They ambled across the square, shuffled in and out of the stores around it, took their time about everything. A day was twenty-four hours long but seemed longer. There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County.

But it was a time of vague optimism for some of the people: Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself.
