When I got to my library 13 years ago, the previous library only bought award winning books... And multiple, multiple copies of each one! I had come straight out of a 3rd grade classroom and could not find many of the books that I had read a loud to my classes over the 10 years I taught. That first year in the library I got rid of most of the multiple copies of those award winners and bought lots of new series and non award winning books. I can say now, that I do have gaps in award winners, but I am ok with that.

I feel so much better after reading the section about the stack of books the teacher was pulling for previewing. I a always doing that creating these huge what looks like huge messes to the outside but the kids laugh usually grabbing them. I am trying to think of a creative way to use the almost like a lottery drawing for the new books. I have 840 students and I do tend to gravitate towards certain genres. I need to make it a personal goal this year not to do that. After reading this chapter I can see looking back where I am sure I influence alot of my readers so I need to make sure I guide them into more self selection.

So damaging.

Like the idea of using a lottery system to let kids check out after book talks or commercials. Having kids do short talks about books and adding them as QR codes on the front of the book work well for my primary grades. We have iPods they can use as well as iPads to watch the videos.
S.
