Readers, Writers, Texts
1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?

I think we study literature to understand not only other cultures, but our own as well. To connect with other cultures and people across the world where we may have thought that we never share the same problems. Also to learn and understand words, that connect back to the global issues.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
We re affected by different texts in different ways because all texts reveal a different issue we as a society and a world face. We are impacted by TTTC because there are many different issues portrayed in the novel, that all readers around the world can connect to.

3. In what ways is meaning constructed, negotiated, expressed and interpreted in TTTC?
Meaning is constructed behind a lot of metaphors. Many of the metaphors being inanimate objects. For example, the rainy river represented life, and how it continues flowing. Or the baby buffalo represents the inevitable loss of innocence in humanity.

4. How does the structure of style of TTTC affect its meaning?
It affects its meaning because it helps the author get the point across of what he is trying to display. If the sentences are long and ongoing, it means the author wants you to feel that length and anticipation of the next sentence. Where as if sentences are short, he's trying to show something that was quick and simple.

It offered not only the hardships and pain that black Americans faced as a whole, but the fight and the determination for equality and freedom that they had in them. The beautiful culture of music and dance that cam from their hardships shows their strength, and not letting the struggle of inequality take that away from them. Art not only represents the struggle, but the beauty of the fight and strength that black communities had from within.

Intertextuality
How valid is the notion of a "classic" literary text? What makes Persepolis "literary" even though it is a graphic novel?
I do not believe it is valid at all. Of course we have "classics" but the thought behind what is believed to be classic literary text is wrong. I think what makes persepolis a literary work is that it holds significant meaning on a global scale, and portrays it through the use of classic literary devices in a modern way.

Time and Space
What insight did Persepolis give you into Iranian life during and after the revolution?
It gave me the insight of cause and effect. Within persepolis we physically can see the major causes in marji's life, which then connect back to the major effects that the revolution had held in her life. Some examples can be seen as the impacts of her leaving her home and the death of her uncle.

How does Persepolis connect to other works we've read? Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.
I believe that Persepolis connects to Beloved under many different categories. In both novels, the concept of loss of innocence is faced with characters in the book. For persepolis we see this every time Marji faces something difficult, and get the aura of lostness that she feels and describes every time she experiences something. And in beloved we see this not only happen to Sethe at sweet home, but with denver as well. As she witnesses more and more things Beloved causes, it forces her to grow up and be the a strong base for her family. Another common theme within both the novels is trauma. Persepolis also connects to the novel The Things They Carry under the themes of trauma and war. In both novels we see the major effects war played on the young minds of those who experienced it, even if that experience was in different ways.

How does Persepolis connect to our world today?
Persepolis connects to out world today through the power struggle and injustices that can be seen today. Within persepolis the power struggle between the government, religeon, and people can be seen in its entirety throughout the novel, and within that the many deaths and injustices it had caused. It connects back today because there will always be power struggle that can be seen, wether it be racial, social, political, and even amongst classes.

How does the structure or style of a literary text affect meaning? Consider how Morrison's stream-of-consciousness, shifting points of view, and use of analepsis and prolepsis impact the meaning of the novel.

- Morrisons use of STream of Consciousness and different viewpoints gives the audience a better and deeper understanding of each of the characters. Especially with placement and timeline, Morrison gives the audience a chance to learn and understand each character and their flaws, before we can jump to a conclusion about any of them. For example, if the Novel had started with Sethe killing her baby, the audience would hold judgement for Sethe wether they mean to ort not. But since we get the background of how She grew up and her struggles with life, we grow a connection and an understanding for Sethe and what she had done.

Time and Space

How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Consider the story of Margaret Garner, the Fugitive Slave Act, and other historical and cultural phenomena and how that has impacted the creation and reception of Beloved.

- For this text, I think it is very important to have a good contextual understanding, without it I feel that I would not have understood anything that was happening in the text. Having a historical context helps us understand what things are going on and why they are happening. Why Slave catcher had gone after sethe, and why sethe had killed her baby.

How does Beloved connect to other works we've read? Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.
-One major way I saw Beloved connect was through the struggle of morality and identifying what is right and what is wrong that Beloved and TTTC represent in each novel.
- Another major way was struggling to find worth and or manliness which both connects to Langston Hughs and TTTC.
How does Beloved connect to our world today?
- Identifying what is right and what is wrong. Everyone has different reasons for what they do, and some might see it as an act of doing good, while someone else sees it as pure evil.
-Manhood and the struggle of feeling comfortable with yourself. In a society today where if you are not manly enough you're less than, Paul D faces the same struggle because he is lost in his manliness in that he cant provide for himself and is dehumanized his entire life.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?

-The style gives the characters voice because we get a deeper understanding into each characters mind and past, where they don't have to blatantly state it. Stream of Consciousness being one of the most important techniques Morrison uses throughout her novel, where we get to hear each character's thoughts and being. The novel also addresses issues of gender through Sethe and her struggles of Motherhood, and through Paul D's struggle of feeling less than a man. Giving us issues that were present then, and present today.

Through this we see both the trauma within the minority, and the moral imbalance within the powerful. I was impacted by auschwitz and after through the eye opening idea of moral question and imbalance. Just because we believe something to be morally wrong does not mean someone else will. Or, we don't see something as morally wrong unless granted a position or form of power.

How does Auschwitz connect to other works we've read? Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.
Auschwitz and after for me mostly connects to TTTC, COADF, and Beloved. Within TTTC and Auschwitz and after, they both carry the ideas of Trauma, moral ambiguity, and power. Through trauma and struggles that are very different, it impacted the way the narrator told the story. As well as moral ambiguity and power, where power was present within both, that often caught people doing acts that probably would not haver occurred if not within a position of power. This idea of trauma and moral ambiguity can also be seen within Beloved, where sethe had killed her baby as one of the impacts of her traumatic experiences of being a slave at sweethome. The idea of trauma often influencing the way a story is told, or how one person acts. This again can be seen within COADF.

How does Auschwitz connect to our world today?
It connects within out world today because the balance of power and morality if often off scale through many aspects of life.
