Hello Lighthouse won the Caldecott Medal last year. This fiction story describes the "life" of a lighthouse. This would be a powerful introduction book to fifth graders to show how an inanimate object can be a main character. It can also be used to show how the writer uses pictures to show that the lighthouse will live on forever.

This new fiction book is quite a surprise. When the reader looks at the cover, we have a stereotype that Harpreet will be a girl. As the reader continues, we learn that Harpreet is a Hindi boy who loves choosing a different colored patka to match his mood for the day. It is a powerful book about stereotypes and friendships, as well as being ourselves. The theme is perfect for third grade and above.

In fifth grade, students read biographies about different people who make a difference.

I am making a display in February about ways we love people, and this is a perfect introduction for this. This book shows ways that people love each other, and many of them are ways that we take for granted - for example, an older brother making toast for his brother and it burns. This book also has many opportunities for making inferences about how the people are showing love, and this can be taught with the upper grades.

This book confuses me as to who it is written for. The subject and title leads the reader to believe it is for kindergarten. However, the vocabulary and imagination of the boy seem more appropriate for second grade. For example, he pretends everything is a kingdom and has many metaphors throughout that might be lost on a five year old. I will try to read it to them at the beginning of next year and see if they comprehend the story.

He became a refugee when he was a young boy and used the hope of playing sports to encourage those around him.

Miss Paul and the President is a nonfiction book about Alice Paul and how she set out to make a difference and fight for women's rights to vote. I love this book because there are not enough children's books about this subject. This book would be perfectly paired with the We Came to America book to show that we all belong here and all have a right to be heard. It is appropriate for third grade and up.
