What musical transmission is.

Ratliff, along with other musical experts, in a way, describes musical transmission as the passing on of music or to reach out to someone within a song. Music, like classical music for example, must be taught by a person that is knowledgeable in that genre of music and learned by those who seek that knowledge in order for the music to thrive and continue to be heard. Musical transmission is that very act! It is, to put it simply, the passing down of musical knowledge. It is most often affiliated with Jazz as Jazz music provided a huge stepping stool for modern music because it broke away from the way western canon was defined. In the case where someone is singing directly to someone else through a song, it is different. In most cases it is not directly said who the person is to the artist but the artist is clearly singing to someone and transmitting a message to them.

He would mention her many times in interviews. "When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life." - John Lennon
