Readers, Writers, Texts
1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?

We study literature to learn lessons from other human beings through their different world views. TTTC is no exception, as we study the story to gain a better understanding of war as a whole through a soldier's eyes, learning about the burdens they carry and how the war both mentally and physically affects them.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?

Literary texts affect us the same way that a rollercoaster or food poisoning would, as we experience different emotions and feelings that the author places throughout the text. TTTC impacts its readers by showing them how real war is, and how real the effects of war are. Before reading TTTC, I had no idea that soldiers could have such deeply-rooted feelings toward war, being able to write an entire story about how it affected them.

3. How does the structure and style of TTTC affect its meaning?

TTTC's style and structure are the main things that mold the book into the model of war that it is. For example, O'Brien throughout the story uses so many different literary devices that you could have a never-ending amount of essays regarding the relation that every single paragraph of the story has to the theme.

Time and Space
Choose 3 out of these 6 questions to answer and reflect on how it relates to our reading and understanding of Hughes' work.

How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text?

How do we approach literary texts from different times and cultures to our own?

To what extent do literary texts offer insight into another culture?

The way that different cultures view the world is translated directly into their literature. Hughes is honestly a great example of this, through his poems we can see the world in a completely different light. I personally have never had to deal with racial, gender, sexual, religious, or any discrimination, as I am a white Christian man, the most basic of basic. So being able to see what a person of color like Hughes sees made me understand how horrible it was for a person like him in the 1950s.

How does the meaning and impact of a literary text change over time?

The meaning of a literary text is heavily context-based, but that context changes drastically over time. For example, Hughes' poems don't apply as heavily to America today as they did to America 70 years ago, because that battle that he fought has been won for the most part. But it can go the other way around. Take literature such as Shakespeare, and how his works have left a permanent impact on literature as a whole. The way poems and plays and books changed because of Shakespeare will continue to matter in today's world forever.

How do literary texts reflect, represent or form a part of cultural practices?

How does language represent social distinctions and identities?

You can learn a lot about someone not only by the language they speak but by the language they use. Let's take dialects for example. The way people form different sentences or what they call different things is a gateway into their personal lives. People with more southern dialects tend to speak with more vigor in their words, while more northern people speak with sophistication. This doesn't apply to everyone of course, but the further you look into the way someone speaks, the more insight you gain on who that person really is.

What connections can you make between some of Hughes' poems?

All of Hughes' poems involve this idea of freedom in one way or another. In "Freedom's Plow" it was about planting the seeds of freedom across America, in "The Colored Soldier" it was about fighting for freedom and coming back to a place where he didn't have any, in "Let America be America Again" it was about turning America into the free country it was mad to be, the list goes on. I feel like the reason he references it so much is because that's what he is all about. He is constantly facing prejudice because of his race and wants to finally be able to feel that same freedom that has been closed off to him for so long.

How do Hughes' poems connect to other works we've read?

Both TTTC and "The Colored Soldier" involve the speaker fighting in a war that they shouldn't be a part of in the first place. They go through similar struggles of losing those that they care about, fighting for a cause that doesn't affect them, and returning to a world where nothing has changed.

How does Hughes' poetry connect to our world today?

Racial discrimination still exists all around the globe in the modern era, even if it isn't as bad as it was back then. Hughes' poems will always be a permanent view of how African American cultures experience and see the world. It also feels as if lots of people have been inspired by Hughes and his works today. Freedom fighters in America tend to carry on similar viewpoints to Hughes, like how we built this country together and belong together, rather than apart.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?
