Levittowns were planned communities with identical houses in the late 1940’s-60’s. Levittowns appeared all over the U.S. in places like: New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and Maryland. The citizens in these communities were under the assumption that conforming to the common idea was popular action to do because it was patriotic to be identical during the time of the Cold War and Civil Rights Movements. Santa Clarita Valley can be considered a Levittown because Santa Clarita has local public works for the community, contains a popular shopping mall, uses a set type of housing model and still uses the California Ranch style housing.

Levittowns, specifically Delaware Valley, were constructed with large public works in the community such as pools, playgrounds and local schools. The youtube clips supports this when the video states that the community was constructed around schools for the children. In Stevenson Ranch, there are multiple school such as Pico Canyon and Stevenson Ranch Elementary School for the children. These schools were strategically woven within the neighborhood for maximum convenience for children to go to school just how the Levittowns were built around the local schools. West Ridge is a strong example of how that community is a present day levittown. The little community is composed of small community pools and parks throughout the area. The neighborhood has two pools with partnering parks right next to each other. The youtube supports this statement because in the video, it shows a clip of the camera panning from a park to a pool which happen to be right next to each other. Religion was a big part of civilian life during the levittown era because America was combatting communism which affiliated with atheism. Americans pushed hard to prove that they were religious in any matter to prevent other Americans from calling them a communist which caused for an importance of churches in the area in Levittowns. But today, America is not combatting Communism but people are just as religious for personal reasons which causes for the construction of churches in the Santa Clarita Valley. The Youtube clips aids this statement by providing an image of a church in the video in which Santa Clarita has many of. The Santa Clarita Valley prides itself on the amount of public works it has and just happens to represent a modern-day Levittown.

They we two parallel lines of stores that faced the parking lots. The malls were centered around a popular department store of the time which could be Pomeroy department store. Modern day strip malls are still built around one major franchise such as a Walmart or a Target. Santa Clarita has multiple strip malls like these such as the one in the photos. When the malls started to lose popularity, the mall converted to the malls that we have today where there are more clothing and retail stores than grocery stores. The malls in the levittowns started from then on to be filled with stores such as Sears, JCPenney, and Woolworth’s. The Santa Clarita town mall has the same type of stores such as a Sears, Macy's and a JCPenny. These malls helped to make life a convenient as possible for the people living in these suburbs so that these citizens didn’t need to go into the main cities to buy clothes and other supplies.

This trend that is continued to be practiced today was a popular practice when constructing the Levittown homes. The homes that were constructed back in the 50’s costed somewhere close to $15,000. The article in “15 Minutes with Levitt of Levittown” stated that these matching home were around 1000 sq feet and had a very futuristic look. Homes today in the Stevenson Ranch area were all built in mass quantities like Levittowns. Yet these homes here are much larger where the homes average 2,700 sq. feet and much more than $15,000. Both homes in these generations lived in gated communities with walls all around it. Homes in this area have a much curvier than the pointy interior of the futuristic  Levittown homes. Homes in Stevenson Ranch are mainly being bought now a days just like how the majority of the Levitt homes were bought and not rented. The reason Levitt homes were bought and not rented is because the GI Bill subsidised the price of houses for returning soldiers which pushed for them to buy homes and not rent. The popular style of the 50’s-60’s was to try and keep everything low. One of the main things Americans liked to keep low was their homes. 15 Minutes With Levitt of Levittown described the levitt homes as low single story home with a connected garage. Houses in the Santa Clarita Valley are still being constructed in this fashion. Homes specifically in the saugus area being built in the California Ranch style like the one is the photo. These homes a  built with indoor/outdoor living. The indoor living was built with outrageous color and built-in appliances. Homes today are not usually built with already installed appliances but some homes do have slots built in for appliances.  These homes are also now usually painted with more basic colors like shades of white and the appliances are now chrome, black and white. The outdoor space was and is still constructed with large pieces of lawn either in the front or backyard. Women back in the Levittowns spent time catering to gardens when they were at home while the men were at work. But men eventually decided to start working on the lawn and enjoyed working on it which made outdoor space popular for both women and men in the 60’s and 2017. Popular styles have not changed much for houses since the creation of the Levittown homes.

They both are master planned communities with many similar qualities. Santa Clarita seems to be based off the Levittowns with everything in the town planned out in excruciating detail and precision. Santa Clarita decided to put a major effort towards the public works like pools, community churches and local schools. Santa Clarita also has similar main town malls and strip malls to the ones in the Levittown communities. Both generations of master plans communities had strict rules on what a house can look like. Finally, the California Ranch style house has remained a popular look for homes throughout the years.
