Sometimes the difference between levels can be fairly squishy. For example: in the article's rubric the difference between "Exceptional" and "Satisfactory" is simply that in one case a student "consistently demonstrates" the appropriate skills (Exceptional) and in the other case "usually demonstrates" the appropriate skills. Are there best practices for defining the various levels so that students have a solid understanding of how to self-assess their work using the rubric?

I've also found rubrics to be a good tool for communicating expectations to families. It's been nice to point to a rubric where everything is clearly laid out in response to emails that say things like, "my kid has no idea what to do" (more from my middle school teaching days than high school!).

Peer and self evaluations with rubrics are an excellent way for students to look honestly at their own work and anticipate their grade. It is a good step to take before allowing revisions.

Providing past student work examples along with rubrics is helpful. However, I usually only show student work samples that achieved the highest level on the rubric. I think it would help students to also show more midrange level student work samples.

I used "Rubrics" as one of my professional goals on an evaluation year and built out many of the projects or assignments in my yearly curriculum. It was very rewarding and a great investment of my time.

while rubrics as assessment tools can help keep a teacher accountable and thinking about equity, there is nothing in this article that helps a teacher investigate their biases (racial, gendered, class, ableist)
