Stonehenge is located near Salisbury, England. Scientists know that the circular stone structure was built between 3000 B.C. and 1520 B.C., but the reason it was built is still a mystery. Researchers have presented a range of theories about what its function was, such as a Druid temple, a tool to read astronomical events, a cemetery, a place of healing, or a place where people from different tribes got together.

The ruins of the ancient Inca site Machu Picchu are in the Andes Mountains in Peru. Scholars are not sure what Machu Picchu actually was. Some theories are: a home for a leader, a temple, a place for a special tribe, or a vacation place for the royal family.

The Yonaguni Monument is an underwater structure made of rocks found off the coast of Japan. No one is certain what it is. It looks like an underwater pyramid. Some scientists think it is what remains of what was once a city that became submerged after an earthquake. Others argue it was created by nature.
