science

Dogs can actually understand what you say.

A recent study by scientists at Emory University in Atlanta shows that dogs indeed know what their owner is saying. to test this they asked owners of 12 different dog breeds to train their dogs to identify 2 different toys such as, a stuffed animal and a ball. Once they learned the task they put them in a scanner and holding up toys they had been trained to recognize and saying meaningless words while holding up toys they had not seen before. The scans showed different brain patterns with toys they had seen and heard before than the ones they hadn’t. It isn’t enough to prove they picture their toy when they hear the word, but it shows recognition and scientists think this this is an important step to understanding how dogs process language.

Scientists on the E/V Nautilus found this white octopus with clear “wings”. The “wings” are actually two fins on the sides of it’s body.Though it was mostly white while the scientists caught it on camera it can change to camouflage into it’s surondings.

Sports

Gymnastics is one of the hardest sports for young adults in their teens and 20’s. Imagine being 43 years old and is still competing! Oskana Chusovinita does just that. She won the USSR junior National championship at age 13 and she won the silver medal in the vault at the 2018 Asian games in Indonesia on August 23, 2018. “Over the last 30 years, the elite athlete has won a total of 32 medals, including 2 Olympic and 11 world championship medals.” (3). Oskana has five moves named after her. Two on vault, two on uneven bars, and one on floor exercise. She now focuses on the vault constantly trying to achieve more at age 43. At the 2016 olympics she attempted the “vault of death” a hard routine that involves a handspring followed by a double summersalt. She didn’t complete it but her effort was “reflective of the gift and competitive spirit Chusovitina has demonstrated through her distinguished gymnastics career.” (5). She’s not done yet. In the 2018 olympics a reporter asked her if it was her final tournament she responded “No! I want to go to Tokyo!” If she qualifies for the 2020 Olympics she will be the oldest Olympic gymnast in 100 years.

Neighborhoods were wrecked and and people were left without electricity and cellphone service.Officials confirmed that at least 26 people were killed. Hurricane Michael also made landfall that sustained wind speeds of 155 miles per hour! Then it started to move inland to Georgia and the East Coast to Virginia. Hurricane Michael was the most powerful hurricane to hit the continental U.S. in almost 50 years. President Donald Trump went to Florida and Georgia on October 15 so he could survey all the damage. It opened in February 2018, and riders have the choice of coasting through three different worlds. Snow, Sky, and Space. To ride the slide all you have to do is put on the VR headset and push off! While VR roller coasters aren’t new, VR water slides are because getting the delicate headset to be waterproof is a complicated task. The ride is 160 meters or 520 feet and last about 35. To make it even better the slide has two hills that you go up! That makes it more roller coaster-like.

Science
Chengdu, a Chinese city, plans to create artificial moons to save their citizens money on lights each night. Wu Chunfeng, the chairmen of the Chengdu Aerospace Science and Technology Microelectronics System Reserch Institute, has recently announced that they will release an artificial moon to provide their city, and places in need of light when they don’t have any, light. Chunfeng says that the first moon-like orb will appear in the sky as soon as 2020. Wu Chungfeng made this announcement at the National Mass innovation and Enterpreneurship Conference, which was held in Chengdu started on October 9 and went to October 15, 2018.
The plan was for the “moon’s” light would come from the sun and then reflect onto the Earth because of it‘s special coating that acts as a mirror. The “moon” will appear eight times brighter than the actual moon due to the fact that the “moon” would only be a mere 300 miles above Chengdu. Luckily, the amount of light being reflected can be toggled on and off or would be able to change the amounts of light.
The Chengdu Aerospace estimate that using the artificial moon to like up 31 square miles of the night sky, would save the city about 1.2 billion yuan ($174 million). The “moon” also has the ability to move so that if there’s a disaster-struck city, they would be able to use the “moon” to provide light if they have lost power.
However, it is said that the moon will not be as big as people imagined, The artificial orb would simply be a bright star if sorts, but that doesn’t mean it’s less effective. It could still help places in need and that’s what matters.

The night before the competition Biles had to go to the hospital because of her kidney. Since she was competing there would be drug tests so Biles hardly took any pain relief so she would pass. At the championships she scored the highest individual scores on floor, vault, and beam. She did an amazing move on vault and was the only female gymnast to ever complete the trick. Now they will call the skill “the Biles”. That night Simone biles took home 6 medals the all around, vault, beam, floor, uneven bars and gold for the team finals. She now holds the record for most all around gold medals (4)!

Smoke was discovered last spring and he is known for literally “controlling” traffic. He’s does this by sitting in the middle of the road. Another crazy thing that smoke does is chase children. He waits at bustops and when kids get off the bus he starts to chase them. He also goes up to strangers and starts gobbling at them. Despite the fact that smoke is a troublemaker, the people in the town love smoke and have even named the town mayor. Smoke can now be found on t-shirts
and on his Facebook page! The bad thing about Smoke is that since he’s so popular now if people see him while driveling it might be dangerous for them to take a picture while still paying attention to the road. A nearby animal sanctuary has been trying to capture smoke for months but claims he has “ninja like moves” that make him very difficult to catch

They had to make sure she was getting the proper nourishment, and since she was too weak to drink from Bibi, the staff had to bottle feed her. And hippos eat a lot. Even if they are small. They also had to keep Fionas body temperature warm all the time, and keep her skin moist. It was a lot of work. But in the end, Fiona ended up surviving, and not only that, she was an online star too. Today Fiona is a happy hippo who can stand up and play with other hippos.

Daylight savings
Joanna Martinez says the main purpose of daylight savings time is to helps make better use of daylight. W o this by changing the clocks in the spring to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. Even though a 2014 study said daylight savings time can put adults at risk for certain health problems, having more light in the evening does have health benefits . For one thing, it lets kids and grown ups be more active outside after school or work. This means they get more exercise. Daylight savings time also saves energy. With more daylight hours, we use less electricity. Lastly, daylight savings time is good for the economy. Longer evenings encourage people to do more shopping. I think we should keep daylight saving time.

Sports

Age is just a number. Olympic gymnast Oksana Chusovitina can prove it to you. Most Olympic gymnasts retire in their late teens or early twenties, but Oksana Chusovitina is still competing at the age of 43. Oksana still competes in the Olympics and is putting her sights on making the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games . She won her first major competition at the age of 13 and now has won 11 world championship medals and 2 Olympic medals. She is special in many ways because, other than competing in gymnastics at the age of 43, she has 5 moves named after her and is only one of two women to compete in the Olympics under three different national teams. She is also the only gymnast ever to compete in seven Olympic Games. If anyone asks Oksana if she will retire before the 2020 Olympics, she simply says “No! I want to go to Tokyo”. Oksana Chusovitina has been competing in gymnastics for 30 years and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Animals

There is a toxic algae bloom, or red tide that has driven people away from beaches and killed thousands of animals off Florida’s Gulf Coast. A red tide happens when an algae that gives out toxins that can hurt people and marine life, grows out of control. The algae can also make the water look red or brown. This is the worst red tide Florida has had since 2006. Although red tides are common in Florida, they usually last only a few months. This red tide started in October and has already become very intense. It has killed 452 sea turtles, and nearly 100 manatees. It has also killed 11 dolphins and thousands of fish.

He’s responsible for creating iconic superhero’s like Iron Man, Spider Man, the X-Men, The avengers, and the Fantastic Four. His first job was at 16 years old and he got hired at what was then called Timely Publications. In 1941 he had his first chance to write a story, “a short text for Captain America #3—he signed his name as Stan Lee.” He later explained he only changed it for “serious literature that he dreamed of writing some day.” The name stuck, and later on, it became his legal name. (2). Even though Stan is no longer with us his personality and charm “will be remembered for generations to come.” (10).

However, don’t tell that to Kami Rita, who scaled the peak of the treacherous mountain for the 22nd time on May 16, 2018 breaking the previous record of 21 successful ascents he shared with two fellow guides. And the veteran mountaineer is not done yet! Prior to embarking on the recent climb, the 48-year-old announced, “My goal is to reach the summit of Everest at least 25 times. Lives the Bonnethead shark, and with it, comes new information we’ve never heard before. On September 21, 2018, a group of researchers published their studies of shark in their natural habitat, and came back with some rather surprising news. The Bonnethead shark has been documented to eat the sea grass in its natural habitat, as well as the regular prey for sharks, such as squid and fish. They thought the shark had eaten the grass accidentally. A group of researchers from the University of California, discovered enzymes in the shark’s stomach that allows the shark to digest the sea grass in its natural habitat.

Among other things, they found a carbon-carrying substance produced by animals on the fossil.

You could ask it for your everyday needs, for example: the weather, the time, to play a video, call someone, alarm, and so much more. It has a human like voice and is great for playing with kids. You can ask Google Assistant to "read along" with a book it knows and it will play matching music and sound effects in the background. If you want it could control your household items, like turning on the lights or playing music. It could be incredibly convenient for a busy family. This investigation is amazing.

Food

Did you know that eating your Halloween pumpkin is good for you? Not only is it good for you, it is also good for the planet. Scientists estimate that about 18,000 tons of edible pumpkin innards are thrown away each year! That is the equivalent of over 100,000 pumpkin pies. About 1.3 billion pumpkins are thrown away each year which is a shame because the seeds are delicious and if we didn’t throw them away, a lot more families probably would have food.

When she was 4 her mom found a blueprint for a 3D—printed hand. She asked the University do Nevada, Las Vegas to make it for Hailey and they agreed. This hand allow her to hold a baseball. A year after she got it her mom (Yong) asked the Baltimore Orioles if she could Throw the first pitch, they said yes. Two years later Hailey asked Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals if she could throw out the first pitch. With that her Journey to thirty was born. Her goal was to throw out the first pitch at all 30 MLB stadiums. At the 2017 World Series she threw out the first pitch in Houston Texas. On September 30 she completed her goal at Angel Stadium. After the game Hailey said she felt “amazing” but didn’t plan to take on another challenge like it any time soon.

Technology

Have you ever wanted your toy to turn into a robot? Well you should hear about the new “robotic skins” which can instantly transform any object into a robot capable of performing basic tasks, like sprinting or climbing. Made using elastic polymer or fabric, the flexible robotic skins can be easily wrapped around objects of all shapes and sizes. They are equipped with sensors as well as air pouches that inflate when pumped with gas, and/or nickel-titanium coils which contract when heated by an electric current. When activated, they help manipulate the object the skins are wrapped around and bring it to “life.” short video below shows a stuffed horse toy wearing the skins.
