It was inspired by Poison Ivy who is one of my favorite comic characters. I wanted to draw the head tilting upwards to make it look like the victim was looking up at Poison Ivy. I wanted to try and create a smile with the vines which you can see in the mouth area with the vines intersecting. Other than that I tried my best to follow the instructions on how to build a bust and made sure to draw my lines to try and keep everything symmetrical. Why did I choose this, because it shows light, and very dark aspects to past life. I did not know why this German helmet soldier popped in the back of my head. It could of been the Chinese soldiers that I observed, that triggered the idea. I do know I am part German, but it is not why the creative process showed up in my mind as a simple German soldier with a helmet on, in back of my head. A lot of creative images show up in my head when I observe other busts. I was struggling with the symbolic element, and trying not to do a bird since they have become so cliche. However, I have been involved with bird conservation and making art about birds for a long time, plus I was inspired by a Moche vessel of a man with a bird headdress, so I went for it. I decided the bird should be the extinct Passenger Pigeon. The bust as it is needs more refining - an interesting thing about looking at a photo is that you can see things you might not notice in 3-D; for example I can now see that the ears are too far back on the head. I need to refine the neck, and would like to put the head on shoulders. I have not gotten very far. I went with the coil method but have struggled to seal the top of the head. I may have gone too thin? I've decided that I really want to sculpt a male because I have never tried to sculpt a male figure before- I always do a female body because that is what I am most familiar and comfortable with. I also am really intrigued by the idea of sculpting facial hair. However, I have not yet come up with any symbolism or concept that I want to commit to. Depending on glazing options or whether we can paint etc.... I may want to go with all pastel colors for a contrast between social male and female gender norms.
