Free the Children began with Craig Kielburger was 12 years old and reading the newspaper. He came across an article of a young boy named Iqbal Masih, a 12-year-old child slave who was murdered for speaking out on human rights. Being the same age as Masih, Kielburger realized that he would have had the same future had it not been for the happenstance of birth. Realizing the need for change Kielburger, along with his brother Marc, and his grade 7 classmates, created the Free the Children organization. Their main goal being to liberate children and families from poverty and exploitation. However, they soon discovered that freeing families was not enough, as many were forced to return in order to support themselves and their loved ones. Thus, Craig and Marc Kielburger expanded their focus and created Free the Children’s WE Villages. An organization that focused on five key pillars including; water, healthcare, education, food security and alternative income.

Twenty years later, Free the Children a renowned international charity that empowers people to seek change in both themselves and the world.

Is the organization working effectively to achieve the objectives of the movement? Why or why not?

The Free the Children organization works effectively to create a positive lifestyle for those less fortunate everyday. Given that the issue of poverty cannot be solved in a day nor by a single individual, Free the Children has surpassed what many others have tried to do. The core of its effectiveness founded upon the understanding that it takes a village to make a difference. With numerous volunteers every year, the achievements of the organization continue to grow. To this day, Free the Children has built over 500 schools across Africa, Latin America, and Asia, providing education to over 50 000 children. However, the organization does not stop there to maximize its impact universally, they have also created other subgroups that individuals can be involved in. Thus, ensuring a greater positive change in various areas and also allowing for individuals to invest their time into sectors they are truly passionate about. For instance, in addition to education, the organization created a health care program which invested 16 million dollars worth of medical supplies to developing countries. Finally, the company also shows it effectiveness by working with with other organizations to promote the shared goal. Free the Children joined forces with Oprah Winfrey’s Angel Network, inspiring over a million young people to share in the journey and make a difference.

I would definitely support the organization after seeing its progress throughout the years, its determination to make the world a better place, and the lives that are drastically changed because of it. Being involved in such an organization would give me a sense of purpose, knowing that I would be actively making a difference in the lives of those around me. Furthermore, my financial situation would not limit me as with other organizations, being that with Free the Children, little things like changing my consumer decisions could potentially help a child in need, (i.e purchasing handmaid Rafi Ki bracelets or other articles of clothing, which would help earn money for the Kenyan artist creating them, potentially placing food on the table, or enabling their children to attend school.)
