Much of St Cecilia's life is steeped in legend, which is because it is difficult to discern between fact and fiction.
According to the legend, on the day of her forced marriage to a pagan, instead of taking part in her wedding, she was singing to God in her heart.
It was over a thousand years after we see a more explicital musical connection, with paintings dating from the 16th century where Cecilia appears with a violin or an organ.
