Sadako loves to run a lot. Sadako was running in a race and her legs started hurting so bad she couldn't run. She was taken to the hospital and found out she got leukemia from the Atom Bomb that was dropped on the city nine years before. She had to stay in the hospital and her family visited her. Her best friend Chizuko, came and visited her at the hospital. She told her about a miracle that if she made a thousand paper cranes, the gods will help her get better. Chizuko gave her a big golden crane to help her get started. Sadako immediately began making paper cranes. Sadako had her brother hang all of the paper cranes from the ceiling. She got lots of gifts from her family and friends. At the end of the book Sadako ended up making six hundred forty-four cranes. She closed her eyes and never woke up again.
