Around the 1840's, America began expanding westward. The west had many resources and land available, so of course, America saw the opportunity and took it. There were many native americans still living there, but as Americans came in, they all fled in fear. Also during this time, The US and Mexico were having a dispute, whcih resulted in war. Pretty much, they wanted the same land and fought over it. To end the war, the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848 establishing the Rio Grande and not the Nueces River as the U.S.-Mexican border. Under the treaty, Mexico also recognized the U.S. annexation of Texas, and agreed to sell California and the rest of its territory north of the Rio Grande for $15 million plus the assumption of certain damages claims. Slavery was also a problem during this time. Mostly in the south, with the slave population being 4 million and growing, the north wasn't nearly as bad.
