I teach in a secondary school, so my students are aged 14-19. However they still don't have clear ideas on their future and when I ask them what they like to do in their free time, they answer: to sleep or play video games! For this reason I'm planning to use the Genius Hour with them to find out their passions and to teach them how to dedicate some time to them. Parents at home and teachers at school have to encourage students' talents and after finding them, to help them in cultivating them at the bestest. In one of my classes there is a teenager who is a national champion of Tip Tap dance. He travels hours during the weekend to go to study in Rome and he loves his passion and he is strongly motivated in succeed in it.

This year I have started a TED-ed club experience for and with my fourth year students, which means that for part of the year lessons they are asked to work on the idea that "makes their heart beat faster" (in TED's words). They follow a path in 13 explorations or steps through which they are asked to "dig deeper" in what they feel passionate about and find the best way to present this idea to the public. Describing it makes the activity seem easy, but it is probably the most difficult task I have given these students. The result is still very far from their own and my perception, but the process is exciting and for the very first time I have seen some of the students (often the ones that rarely participate) get excited and willing to get the next stage, to the next exploration, to the next activity.

Conveying enthusiasm, encouraging passion and purpose is of utmost importance. However, it is not always easy to achieve those goals.
Last year, I managed to involve the most difficult students in a project. We were covering the topic of Advertisements. Students were acquainted with the rules of making a good advert (both the linguistic and the artistic aspects). Then they formed groups of four and were supposed to make an advert for either a certain product (e.g. perfume, organic food, night club, fitness club, dog/cat beauty salon, etc). The results were amazing. It was a real joy to watch how the most uncooperative students contributed to the project with their creative ideas. This is one of the adverts they made:

Sometimes they didn't have a strong motivation to pursue their goals and so I used to talk with them about their aspirations, their passions, their dreams and hobbies: in one word, about what they really wanted to do in their lives. By talking to an emphatic person they became able to focuse their interests and to comprehend if they made the right choice. I never heard before about the Genius hour but I think that, in an informal way, my approach was a practical method to put it into practice because the students found alternative ways to develop their skills both at the university or at work.

Recently some students suggested that they wanted to explore the outdoors for the "choosing time" session. At the beginning of each lesson, every student can introduce his/her passion to his/her classmates by speaking, showing photos or videos or slides, showing any products of their passion (e.g. handmade objects, singing, playing a musical instrument, etc.)

I do think it can work at school, but why not giving students 10 or 20% of school time as a whole, independent of any subject?
Students could be warned in advance of this activity and they could take to school anything related to their passion, like for instance a drawing book and pencils, different kinds of materials for craftwork, imagination would be the limit, following of course certain principles so as not to disturb others.
It sounds like a great idea!

If they do not see any relevance in what they are supposed to do, then they will easily lose interest. Usually in English lessons when I introduce a new grammatical phenomenon I encourage my pupils to invent funny phrases by using the new grammatical structure. Students are also often encouraged to present to others what they are good at. Or if you would like to introduce a new grammatical tense, e. g. will-future, you could ask them: Immagine a world where you cannot express your ideas about the future. Would we not miss something?

Let them appreciate the fact that struggle and collaboration real mean, that their engagement means more than talent let them understand that through real engagement and collaboration they can achieve better results than through simple talent. I try to let my students understand that failure and disappointments are only a starting point and not a barrier which could block their way. The worst thing we could do is to let them feel constantly judged if they make mistakes.

Real tasks and amusing activities help, of course, but I believe that teachers should change often the activities as each student is different from the others and has developed a different intelligence (--> Gardner). Diversify the activities means changing, trying to stimulate their interest and their natural will to learn new things. And this variety should also allow the students to use their own creativity, to feel themselves alive and active.

I try to get my students to work on an inquiry based learning basis, to do research and use their creativity and to innovate in their final presentations, but I do not leave 20% of the class time to do an individual project focused on a theme that awakens their passion. Maybe if I make better time management I can implement the Genius Hour project. I'll try, certainly.

I really like the idea of Genius Hour, but I feel the need to investigate it a bit more before I can state with certainty whether I can implement it or not in my classes. One thing I know for sure. Since I teach English the only limitation would be that their "passion", their "driving force" would have to be in English. Then another limitation is that I would have to approve of their investigation. For examle, if a student is very passioante about gambling, well I would not be able to allow that since it discloses an "issue" which is at stake and an issue which is too "big" for me to tackle. Regulations in Italy are pretty strict. Last but not least I would have to inform parents and make sure they approve of this approach which is different from the one they "may" want for their children. Parents can be very "fierce" and "intrusive". I would need to expalin what it is, obviously.

Even when the children are very young, teachers can implement the 'Genius Hour' in the teaching and learning. Teachers can follow the children's lead, find out what their interests, likes and dislikes are and set up the activities to follow their interests. When the children are passionate and motivated to learn about what they are interested in, then their outcomes improve and they start making a rapid progress. Teachers need to follow pupils' interests and give them a voice in order to make them passionate learners. It is important to use provocative thinking to get the children interested and encourage them to explore.

We should arrange our classrooms and lessons, even set activities, to allow students to explore, learn, research, create, invent or follow any passion that they have in life. This would be of great motivation for them and would surely work positively on their self-esteem.. What can you do at school to get children passionate?
I did not know Genius Hour. It sounds interesting, but I should know more about it.
I think it should not be so easy to apply. In Italy teaching is quite conservative and this transforms often students in passive people. Sometimes they prefer a passive lesson than one in which they have to be the protagonists. At least I experimented this in upper secondary school.
So we should prepare students to activities like these and make them aware about the potentialities of this methodology. Using their passions could get it easier.
We teachers are sometimes scared about activities not strictly connected to curriculum or to contents in general, but we have to find the positive things also in such methods.

It'd increase their problem solving's competences as well as creativity and sense of initiative. It is hard for me to think about applying it in my own classrooms as I teach in prison and in order to accomplish this kind of activities, students'd need access to any kind of resources thay may need, including technical devices and internet connection. Unfortunately we are not allowed to that.

My 8th grade students (15-years old) are rather reluctant to reveal and talk about their future plans or imagine about their future. Genius Hour gives an opportunity them to imagine as geniuses, millionaires, etnrepreneurs etc. and just to give as many good and fantastic ideas on this topic as possible. I hope it opens the students and gives them more positive attitude if they can think about themselves as geniuses or millionaires.

But I heard about similar movements from time to time in the past.
The idea is simple but amazing at the same time At school my students and I arranged to work on themes they appreciate and that are particular relevant to them.
As design plays the main role in their course of study, we've decided to discover the life of some brilliant and successful designers to boost their sense of entrepeurship that is accompanied by all the practice they do when attending laboratories.
All this work will help them to improve their sense of being part of a society where they can make decisions by themselves and work on their projects. That's all hard work. In all this I don't know if I have time to try the Genius Hour but I'll surely give my students time to let me know which aspects, projects they would like to work on at a deeper level so that learning English and realizing for instance objects of design will be more interesting. For sure all this will broaden their horizons

We think that is the path to walk if we, as teachers, want pupils with passion, interest and resilience. So we work together, every subject, or most of them, in project and tasks that matters. And matters i the world outside school! We have to have recipients to the projects; people in the community/municipality, entrepreneurs in the local area, parents, other students in other schools When the students know their work is going to be seen and used by interested people, they try again and again and the result will matter. Not for the school´s sake but for their own sake.
The result should be valuable for somebody else to really matter. So when we were just a new member in e twinning two years ago, I asked by them to be more creative because the project was their''s . So they had and realized very good ideas. I often try to encourage especially pupils that are not confident to them selves . I also say to them : Everybody is valuable in something , may be you are not good in Math , but you are very good in something else. But being not very good in Math , does not mean that you have to surrender , nut to give your best.

I have already implemented the Genius Hour in the classroom, making Origami sessions, Creative writing, making crystals, and a few others. It has been made one step at a time, allowing the kids to choose their topic, time and duration, dynamic, and a new learning dimension. My role as a teacher in Genius Hour is to create an environment that allows students to discover their interests and abilities and also to provide great feedback on work that has been produced. There are kids that naturally take the roles of the Leader, the Manager, the Producer or the Designer

Those roles may change as the project progresses.

The leader might also have a hand at making, but this person must have a vision or goal for the group.

When students are working on their projects, as a teacher I have to be there to guide them through each step and make sure they are staying on track with their work.

Teachers should be extremely approachable, and willing to listen and respond to students’ ideas and questions.
