A quarter of Earth was once covered by grasslands, but much of these have now been turned into farms. This has resulted in a widespread loss of wildlife habitat.
Grassland soil is rich, and almost anything can be grown on it, this encourages farmers to destroy and build industrial buildings and properties.
Global warming also has a major impact in grasslands as it changes weather and rain patterns which dries the land, reducing nutrition and food for the agriculture.
Another threat is the development of urban areas which is giving a major impact on our loss of habitat.
Another factor of loss is when crops grow, pests travel to them and inhabit the agricultural land, eating the grass, brings diseases and leaves the land to a dry wasteland.

soul
Endemic organisms with limited ranges are most affected by habitat destruction, mainly because these organisms are not found anywhere else within the world and thus, have less chance of recovering. Many endemic organisms have very specific requirements for their survival that can only be found within a certain ecosystem, resulting in their extinction. Extinction may also take place very long after the destruction of habitat, a phenomenon known as extinction debt. Habitat destruction can also decrease the range of certain organism populations. This can result in the reduction of genetic diversity and perhaps the production of infertile youths, as these organisms would have a higher possibility of mating with related organisms within their population, or different species. One of the most famous examples is the impact upon China's giant panda, once found across the nation. Now it is only found in fragmented and isolated regions in the southwest of the country, as a result of widespread deforestation in the 20th century.[5]
</sup>

Out of 21000 square kilometers today there are only a few thousand square kilometers left. They were the early settlers' favorite because that meant farming straight away. And more were wiped away for suburban development and for industrial development. And more were wiped as new species were introduced.

The world's forests, swamps, plains, lakes, and other habitats continue to disappear as they are harvested for human consumption and cleared to make way for agriculture, housing, roads, pipelines and the other hallmarks of industrial development. Without a strong plan to create terrestrial and marine protected areas important ecological habitats will continue to be lost.
http://wwf.panda.org/about_our_earth/species/problems/habitat_loss_degradation/

soul
Orangutans and other species lose habitat to palm oil plantations

Palm oil plantations in the tropical regions of Africa, Latin America, and Asia have led the large scale destruction of important habitat for many species. The largest growth of palm oil plantations has been in Malaysia and Indonesia where large tracts of rain forest are cleared to grow palm oil crops. Orangutans, tigers, elephants, rhinos, and many other species are increasingly isolated and their sources of food and shelter are in decline. Human-wildlife conflict also increases because without sufficient natural habitat these species come into contact with humans and are often killed or captured.
http://wwf.panda.org/about_our_earth/species/problems/habitat_loss_degradation/
