Phineas Gage suffered a blow to the head which did impact his frontal lobe. However, he was able to retain basic motor functions and abilities to speak.
What was impacted in the frontal lobe was his emotions (behaviors mostly).
It can be said that the rod had impacted Gage's amygdala. It is theorized that this caused him to have an issue processing emotion.
Phineas has been a case that is continued to be studied and had a significant impact on early on neurology.
