They form the foundation for understanding multiplication, division, and algebra. These operations also help students reason about quantities and changes in everyday life.</p></li><li><p>Based off readings and class discussions, both operations can be taught using manipulatives, visuals, and real-world examples before moving to abstract symbols. For addition, strategies like counting on and making ten are useful, while subtraction can be shown through taking away or comparing quantities. Using manipulatives such as counters, cubes, or ten-frames helps students visualize what is happening in each operation.</p></li><li><p>My main concern is that students might focus only on memorizing procedures instead of understanding the meaning behind each operation. It can also be challenging to ensure every student benefits from manipulatives and connects hands-on activities to written math.</p></li><li><p>I feel most confident using manipulatives and visual models to make math concepts more concrete and engaging. I also feel comfortable leading discussions that help students explain their strategies and understand how addition and subtraction relate to one another, helping them expand these operations beyond simple computation problems.</p></li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li><p>Students must understand how to add and subtract in order to be successful in math in their future. They are the basic blocks of learning for this subject.&nbsp;</p></li><li><p>Using visuals such as blocks (base ten) is a great way to teach students these skills. It allows them to visually see what is happening when performing these operations. </p></li><li><p>It is easy for students to just memorize these quick facts, but it is important they understand the why.</p></li><li><p>I feel most confident teaching addition and subtraction using modeling and building blocks. I think this is one of the easiest ways to create a visual model for students so they understand the WHY of the actual conceptual math skills they are doing. </p></li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>1) Addition and subtraction is the backbone of all other mathematical concepts. A foundation in addition and subtraction reasoning is needed to participate and succeed in everyday life (ex: cooking, measuring a doorframe, etc.) </p><p><br/></p><p>2) Based on class readings and discussions, I will use manipulatives to teach each operation. Manipulatives, such as base ten blocks or counters, will help students connect a specific number to a quantity. Real-world examples will also show students the importance of learning these operations and will motivate them to keep learning. </p><p><br/></p><p>3) I am mostly concerned about motivating students to learn about math facts in general. If students do not succeed with math facts at first, they may become discouraged and not want to complete academic activities. </p><p><br/></p><p>4) I feel most confident in teaching addition through repeated addition models. I find that most students grasp addition through the repeated addition method, specifically when skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li><p>Subtraction and addition is extremely important, it is a key foundational skill that will be used in everyday life and future math concepts and math is spiral!</p></li><li><p>Based on class reading to teach operation you present it as taking apart(decomposing) and combining(composing). In addition, connecting addition and subtraction to place value can be very helpful. It is also key to present students with multiple strategies such as think-addition or jump strategies.</p></li><li><p>My main concerns about doing so is that I was taught a very standard procedural way of math so I want to make sure I teach them the reasoning behind it and true understanding.</p></li><li><p>I feel confident teaching addition and subtraction the most out of different math areas as I feel there are so many different strategies and visuals(manipulatives) to help teach it!</p></li></ol>]]></description>

Addition and Subtraction are building blocks for all math concepts, develops number sense</p><ol start="2"><li><p>You can use objects such as base ten blocks, visuals, using number lines, connecting to real life word problems, </p></li><li><p>A concern that I have seen in my placement is that students will watch what the teacher does and memorize the motions of counting and not actually grasp what or why she is doing that. </p></li><li><p>I feel most confident using add-on and subtraction with modeling and being able to use cubes with the students and understanding the materials used during the lesson. This gives them a better understanding of what they are doing and learning. </p></li></ol><p><br/></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>1) It builds computational fluency and provides students with the information needed to form a foundation for higher math concepts.</p><p>2) I would start with direct modeling to help students invent thier own strategies that help them remember how to solve. Then I would introduce the standard algorithms with models.</p><p>3) Rushing to the Standard Algorithm before students develop conceptual understanding, which leads to systematic errors and confusion with regrouping</p><p>4) I am confident about using models and visuals to support student understanding.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li><p>addition and subtraction is super important because it is part of those foundational prerequisite skills that more complex math topics are built upon. If students are not fluent in addition and subtraction they are going to have a hard time learning new skills like multiplication and division, etc. </p></li><li><p> According to readings and class discussions these skills can be taught through manipulatives, visuals, hands on examples. </p></li><li><p>My main concern is that the approaches I have learned won't land with every student and I won't know how else to help them. </p></li><li><p>I feel confident in terms of using mathematical language. My understanding of vocab is a strong suit for me so I know that I will portray that onto my students. I also feel confident drawing pictures and visuals to help students. </p></li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>   1. Addition and subtraction are incredibly important for multiple reasons. Not only do they promote problem-solving skills, but the development of these skills also build their reasoning skills. These operations are the foundation of math skills that students will need to utilize in the future. They will also use it every day in their life in scenarios like grocery shopping so it is crucial for them to understand these operations</p><ol start="2"><li><p>Based on the class reading, I would teach these operations using manipulative and visuals. Being in a kindergarten classroom, I see already how much my students benefits from having manipulatives to understand adding and taking away values. This would also help promote their reasoning and problem solving skills as well. </p></li><li><p>My main concerns for teaching these skills are how to support my students who fall behind or need extra support to understand these concepts. In my placement now I have 22 students and it is hard to monitor the room and provide the support that all my students need. </p></li><li><p>I feel most confident in being able to implement the use of manipulatives successfully in my lessons and in the classroom. I think that using these techniques will be beneficial for my students and I feel comfortable using them in the classroom. </p></li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li><p>Addition and subtraction are important because it shows how to build with numbers and problem solve. It also shows us how to work with real life problems as well with things such as money. It is the biggest thing stepping stone when it comes to learning math. </p></li><li><p>Based on the class reading I feel that these operations are best taught through manipulatives as well as other visuals or real life work. This helps students to deepen their understanding of learning these operations. </p></li><li><p>The biggest concern when teaching addition and subtraction is that students may not develop a deep understanding, instead they may fall into a pattern of memorization which is concerning. </p></li><li><p>In the classroom the place I feel most confident is showing the students how to use different strategies as well as breaking things down for them to understand in easier ways. Being able to connect with the students especially when it comes to discussing different methods they use is also something I feel very confident in. </p></li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>1. Addition and subtraction are the building blocks of math. Students must have a strong understanding of these operations in order to move onto more complex things, such as multiplication and division- or even just to be able to do more problem-solving. Addition and subtraction are connected to number sense... and knowing how to do addition and subtraction/what it means to add and subtract, truly helps students make sense of numbers in every day life. </p><p><br/></p><p>2. I think hands-on learning is a great starting point. We have talked about in class how counting is one of our main starting points with any operation... especially addition and subtraction. Using counters, or objects.... and eventually base-ten blocks... paired with class reading, I think is a good way to really keep the students engaged. This helps them see it, and not just have words mean nothing.</p><p><br/></p><p>3. I get concerned about if students are just copying me and what I do.... or if they actually know what they are doing conceptually. I feel like it is still hard for me to pick out the difference early on.</p><p><br/></p><p>4. I do feel very confident with base-ten blocks and counters, because I have used them very frequently. I also like checking addition with subtraction/subtraction with addition. Using a hundred chart to count or skip count... or just to move to see the addition/subtraction.</p>]]></description>

I feel comfortable teaching a small group and then preparing a larger group after gaining a proper understanding of students' struggles. </p></li></ol>]]></description>
